CCU baseball, softball teams boast pitchers of the week

Coastal Carolina’s baseball and softball teams had players earn the Big South Conference Pitcher of the Week Awards.

Coastal junior Ryan Connolly and freshman Kiana Quolas were honored for their performances on the mound for games played Feb. 20-26.

Quolas, who earned the honor for the second straight week, posted a 2-1 record after pitching 20.1 innings to help Coastal pick up four wins in the Chanticleer Challenge on Friday through Sunday.

During the Chanticleers 4-0 win over Temple on Friday, she pitched a complete game, striking out five, while allowing just three hits and one walk.

The following day Quolas pitched another complete game against IPFW, in which she gave up five hits, no walks and struck out five in 7.1 innings.

Quolas earned her second win of the tournament on the third and final day of the tournament when she pitched 6.0 innings in the 7-0 win against Temple on Sunday. During the game Quolas tallied five strikeouts and gave up just two hits.

Quolas finished the weekend with a 0.00 ERA and held the opponents’ to a .135 batting average. On the season Quolas has a 6-1 record with a 0.97 ERA. She has given up only eight runs, no home runs, 28 hits and has struck out 30 in 46.1 innings pitched.

Connolly recorded two saves and did not allow a run in three relief appearances for the Chanticleers. He pitched the final 1.1 innings in the 1-0 win over Iowa Friday, entering the game in the eighth with runners on second and third with two outs and recording a strikeout to end the inning.

In the ninth, he retired all three batters faced, including two Ks to earn the save. Connolly saved Coastal’s 3-2 win over NC State on Sunday.  He pitched the ninth inning, and after allowing a one-out single, induced a pair of fly outs to end the game.

On Saturday versus Virginia Tech, he did not factor in the decision as he only faced one batter, who reached on an error but was subsequently thrown out attempting to steal second.

This marks the first time Connolly has earned the league’s weekly honor. He has led the Big South in appearances in both 2010 and ’11 with 40 and 32, respectively.
