CCU captures top-10 finish at 3M Augusta Invitational

ccugolf-obThe Coastal Carolina men’s golf team fired a final round 295 for a 54-hole total of 876 and moved up one spot and tied #38 Pepperdine for 10th in the annual 3M Augusta Invitational, played at the par 72, 7.231-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.

In addition to Pepperdine, there were eight other teams in the 15-team field ranked among the nation’s top 45. The fourth-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini carded a final round 276 (12-under par) to hold off #2 Texas. The Illini won the team title with a 54-hole total of 837 while #2 Texas, who was tied with Illinois through two rounds, posted a 9-under 279 to finish second (840). Host and 35th-ranked Augusta shot an even par 288 and slipped from the lead after two rounds to finish third with a score of 846.

The rest of the top eight included #3 Georgia (854), #14 South Florida (856), #40 New Mexico (862), #44 Tennessee (868) and #32 Houston (868).

Coastal finished with rounds of 290-291-295 for a 54-hole total of 876. The 38th-ranked Waves posted rounds of 284-292-3000 for their 876.

Ryan Carpenter moved up two spots in the final round to lead CCU by tying for 27th (70-74-73=217). The junior started on hole 10 and was birdied his second hole of the day, the par 5 11th. He suffered a double bogey on the par 3 13th and bogeyed the par 3 16th. He rallied with a birdie on the par 5 17th and reeled off 10 straight pars to finish his round with a 1-over 73.

Alfredo Ruiz carded a 3-over 75 in the final round to tie for 45th with a 54-hole total of 75-72=75=222). The junior was 2-under par after three holes, but suffered a double bogey on the 14th hole and had three other bogeys over his final 13 holes to shoot 75.

Olle Widegren finished in a tie for 49th with a 54-hole score of 223 (74-72-77). Thadd Obecny II and Luis Ruiz were both one stroke behind Widegren as the duo tied for 51st with a score of 224. Obecny shaved seven strokes off his round two score to move up 13 spots to 51st. He offset three bogeys with two birdies to shoot a 73. Ruiz also had two birdies, but had two bogeys and a double to shoot a 74 in the final round.

Coastal Carolina will return to action April 11-12 at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invite, played at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
