Chants draw with Tribe; duo nets Sun Belt honors

Coastal Carolina and William & Mary played two extra periods, but could not come away with a winner in a 1-1 draw.

It was a match the Chanticleers clearly controlled from the outset, but the visitors were the first to land a blow in the 31st minute as Antonio Bustamante picked up a loose ball in front of the net and was able to score giving the Tribe a 1-0 lead.

That lead did not last long as on the Chanticleers next possession Romario Piggott was able to knock in a rebound off the cross bar to even the score just 49 seconds later. Frantzdy Pierrot was credited with the assist.

CCU out shot W&M 12-4 and 9-2 in corner kicks. Both teams finished with three shots on goal as both goal keepers had two saves for the match.

Next up for CCU will be Sun Belt member Appalachian State Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. It is the final regular season home match for 13 seniors, who will be introduced and honored at 12:45 p.m.

* For the third time this season, and second consecutive week, Coastal Carolina has swept the weekly men’s soccer awards announced by the Sun Belt Conference office late Tuesday afternoon. The two players received their honors based on the Chanticleers upset road win over #2/3 ranked Maryland.

Frantzdy Pierrot was named the co-offensive player of the week along with Jamie O’Grady from Hartwick. Pierrot scored the lone goal in the 1-0 win in the eighth minute of the match. It was a show-stopping goal as he was able to gather a throw-in from Ryan Willougby and send a bike kick into the left side of the net just out of reach of the diving Maryland goalie. It was Pierrot’s fourth goal of the season and his first match-winner this year.

Braulio Linares-Ortiz was again named the conference’s defensive player of the week. It is the third time this season he has received the weekly honor. Linares-Ortiz was in goal all 90 minutes of the match against the Terps. He had three saves in the match earning his third complete shutout of the season. He now has 46 total saves on the season and a .742 saves percentage while playing a little over 1,110 minutes in goal.
