CCU golfers in fourth place at Hackler Championship

Coastal Carolina carded a two-round score of 605 and is in fourth place in the 11-team field at the Chanticleers’ annual General Hackler Championship, played at the par 72, 6.950-yard TPC of Myrtle Beach.

Arkansas, ranked 17th nationally, leads the event, carding rounds of 283-289 for a six-over par 582. Kent State, ranked 23rd, is two shots back, shooting 296-288 for an eight-over 584. The 29th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers are third (289-300=589), followed by #48 Coastal Carolina (295-310).

Individually, Arkansas’ Thomas Sorensen leads with a 3-under 141, shooting 68-73. Tennessee’s Oliver Goss is second at 1-under 142, followed by #25 Corey Conners of Kent State and Martin Simonsen, each of whom stand at even par 144.

Coastal Carolina has two golfers tied for 11th at 4-over par 148 as Roberto Ballesteros shot 70-78 and Andrew Dorn shot 73-75. Ballesteros was even par through 12 holes on his first round after three birdies and three bogeys. He suffered bogeys on holes 13 and 15, but eagled the par 5 14th hole before posting birdies on holes 16 and 18 for his 2-under par 70. He was tied for second after 18 holes. The junior had three double bogeys and three birdies in the afternoon session to lead to his 6-over 78.

Dorn carded three birdies and four bogeys for his 1-over 73 in the morning. In the afternoon, the sophomore was on pace for a second round of 73 – getting 13 pars, two bogeys and a birdie – but a double bogey on the par 3 17th led to his 75.

Junior Kevin Vanden Heuvel, playing as an individual, is tied for 13th with a 5-over par 149 (72-77). Starting on hole 10, Vanden Heuvel had birdies on holes 12, 15, 16 and 18 with bogeys on 13 and 14 for a 2-under 34 at the turn. He would bogey holes 1 and 9 for an even par 72. In round two, Vanden Heuvel posted 14 pars en route to his 77. Also playing as an individual, Easton Renwick, who won the Charleston Shootout earlier this week, is in 27th place, shooting 78-75 for a 9-over par 153.

Sebastian Soderberg, ranked 95th nationally, is tied for 20th with a 7-over 151 (73-78). The senior had only 14 pars over two rounds as his up-and-down day featured nine birdies, 111 bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey.

Ben Wheeeler (79-79=15) is tied for 41st and Peter Valasek (83-83=165) is tied for 59th.

The final round of the General Hackler Championship is set for 18 holes on Tuesday.
