Chanticleers add two JUCO transfers to signing class

The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team will welcome in two additional newcomers as part of the 2013 class, head coach Cliff Ellis announced on Friday.

Josh Cameron (Racine, Wis.) and Deonte Houston (Bronx, N.Y.) have both committed to continue their basketball careers at CCU.

Cameron, a 6-1 guard from Connors State College, will join the Chanticleers as a junior. Last season he helped lead Connors State to a 24-9 record and a trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.

Cameron, a two-year starter for the Cowboys, was a first team Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference and Region II selection. He scored 934 points in his two seasons, averaging 15.0 points an outing. Cameron also had 116 assists while at Connors. At the free throw line Cameron connected on 200-of-251 for 79.6 percent at the line.

While a senior at Racine Park High School, Cameron was selected fourth team Associated Press All-State, All-Racine County and first team All-Southeast Conference. He averaged 14.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.3 blocks as a senior as well.

Cameron averaged 24.0 points per game as a junior at Kenosha Christian Life School after averaging 20.0 ppg as a sophomore when he attended Parkway Christian School in Oak Creek, Wis. He earned first team all-league honors in the Southern Division of the Midwest Classic Conference as a junior.

“Josh is a combo guard who helped lead his team to the NJCAA National Tournament last season,” said Ellis. “He is a pure shooter who hit 46 percent of his shots from three last season and was nearly 80 percent from the free-throw line.”

Houston, a 6-1 guard from Olney Central Community College, is from Bronx, N.Y., and will enter the 2013-14 season as a junior. Houston averaged 15 points, five rebounds and five assists per game at Olney. He led Onley to a 21-12 record last season and a trip to the regional semifinals.

Houston was ranked as the 28th overall junior college prospect by JucoJunction.com earlier this season. He previously attended Wings Academy where he averaged 14.3 points, 6.4 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. While at Wings he helped lead the team to the city semifinals.

“Deonte is a tremendous point guard,” said Ellis. “He has great experience and has won at every level. He’s a do it all point guard that makes his teammates better. We are very excited for him to join the Coastal Carolina program.”

Houston was arrested as a high school senior for assault and robbery but the charges were later dropped.
