CCU hurler Holmes makes Freshman All-American list

ccubase-holmesCoastal Carolina pitcher Bobby Holmes was named to the 2015 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team, selected by Collegiate Baseball.

Holmes was the 2015 Big South Freshman of the Year and tabbed second team All-Big South as a relief pitcher. The Athens, Ga., native posted a 4-1 record in 27 appearances with four saves and a 2.90 ERA.

Holmes was one of Coastal’s top relief pitchers before being forced into the starting rotation for the final two weeks of the regular season and the postseason.

In 23 relief appearances, Holmes posted a 1.20 ERA while going 4-0 with four saves, including one versus Texas Southern in the NCAA College Station Regional before serving as a starter the next day versus sixth-ranked Texas A&M.  He threw 45.0 innings as a relief pitcher with 45 strikeouts while allowing 29 hits and six earned runs (11 total) with 11 walks. As a starter, Holmes was 0-1 with a 7.41 ERA while recording just 10 strikeouts in 17.0 innings with five walks, 25 hits and 14 earned runs (16 total).

This season, Holmes earned his first save as he pitched 4.1 innings versus Clemson and allowed two hits and one run with no walks and a season-high six strikeouts. His best performance came at Florida State as he was tabbed Big South Pitcher of the Week for his effort. Holmes earned the win versus the then seventh-ranked Seminoles as he pitched 6.0 scoreless and hitless innings.

After Holmes earned his save versus Clemson, he earned the win in his next outing at UNC Asheville. Between the Clemson and UNCA games, Holmes retired 12 of his final 13 batters versus the Tigers (lone exception being a Clemson batter reaching on an error) and all 10 batters he faced versus the Bulldogs. Those two outings were part of a 17-game span (Mar. 2-Apr. 28) that he posted a 3-0 record with three saves and a 0.84 ERA with 36 strikeouts in 32.1 innings and just three walks.

Holmes becomes the ninth Chanticleer to be named a Freshman All-American, joining Byron Binda (2002), Nick McCully (2007), Scott Woodward (2008), Daniel Bowman (2009), Anthony Meo (2009), Tylor Motter (2009), Ryan Connolly (2010) and Seth Lamando (2013).
