CCU men, women remain unbeaten in Big South play

ccusoc-dudeA first half goal by Joel Perez and second half goals by Tommy Gudmundsson and Ollivier Gueguen were more than enough as No. 23 Coastal Carolina defeated UNC Asheville by a 4-0 final in a Saturday matinee at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

Perez scored in the 21st minute, Gudmundsson notched goals in the 65th and 66th minute and Gueguen added a final counter in the 78th minute to move Coastal to 9-3-0 on the season. Moreover, the victory was the Chanticleers’ sixth straight and improved the squad to 4-0-0 in Big South play.

Coastal opened the game just as it had in its last three conference matches – on the attack. The Chanticleers’ high-pressure attack immediately produced shot attempts and corner kicks. However, the UNC Asheville (1-6-2) defense and goalkeeper Dan Jackson withstood the early onslaught.

Perez finally broke through the Asheville defense at the 20:32 mark, scoring the first goal of his Chanticleer career in the 21st minute. Perez, who transferred to Coastal last season from Spartanburg Methodist, received a pass inside the box from Sergio Camargo, turned quickly and buried his shot in the right corner of the net. With the goal, Perez became the 10th Chanticleer to score this season.

CCU women 1, Winthrop 1

The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw on the road at Winthrop on Saturday afternoon, extending its unbeaten streak to six games.

The Chanticleers also remained undefeated in Big South Conference play at 4-0-1, while moving to 7-5-2 overall. The last time Coastal played its first five conference games without a loss was 2008. That team went 5-0 en route to winning the regular-season championship. The current six-game unbeaten run in also the program’s longest since that same squad won nine consecutive matches.

Kacey Kelley tallied the goal for Coastal in the first half. It was her ninth of the season, tying a career high that she established as a sophomore in 2012, and the 25th of her career.

Winthrop senior forward Krystyna Freda, who recently became the Big South’s all-time leading points scorer, evened the game in the 71st minute for the Eagles (5-6-1, 1-3-1).

Kelley found the net in 15th minute as her cross from the right side of the box went over the head of Winthrop keeper Amelia Henderson and into the top of the goal.
