CCU men’s golf signs pair of aces from opposite coasts

ccugolf-fryeCoastal Carolina head men’s golf coach Kevin McPherson announced the signings of Vinnie Murphy and Harrison Frye to National Letters of Intents.

Murphy, a junior college transfer out of South Mountain (AZ) CC, and McPherson, an all-state selection out of Gastonia, NC, will be part of the Chanticleers’ program for the 2014-2015 season.

Murphy, a graduate of Puyallup High in Edgewood, WA, before attending South Mountain for one year, won the Phil Mickelson Award as the 2014 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Freshman of the Year, earned NJCAA Division II PING first team All-American honors and was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America NJCAA Division II All-Freshman team.

This past season, Murphy helped South Mountain win the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) title, while earning All-ACCAC. He posted a 70.9 scoring average, thanks to a 4-under par 140 (72-68) in winning the Paradise Valley Invitational. In addition, he was runner-up three times and had seven total top 10 finishes. Murphy, who had a 3.87 GPA, has placed outside the top 20 just once in nine events. At Puyallup High School, Murphy was a three-time South Puget Sound League 4A medalist. Murphy will come to Coastal as a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining.

Frye led Forestview High to the North Carolina 3A State Championship this past season, as he placed fourth individually with a two-round total of 145 (72-73). Prior to the state title, he earned the Big South 2A/3A Conference Golfer of the Year Award, posting a stroke average of 70.5, and helped Forestview finish off its 10th consecutive conference team championship.

This past fall, he took medalist honors in back-to-back events, winning the American Junior Golf Association Boys Senior Championship and Future Collegians World Tour at Mystic Dunes. He was named to the 2013 N.C. Boys’ All-State Golf Team (third team) by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association and the Carolinas Golf Association.
