CCU men’s track celebrates reprieve with solid showing

On the day the Coastal Carolina University men’s track and field team learned that the program is not being dropped as it learned last week, the Chanticleers celebrated by doing what they do best.

Freshman Jordan Entwistle of the Coastal Carolina track & field team set a new personal record and finished first in the men’s javelin with a distance of 65.78 meters (215-10) to lead the Chants on the opening day of the Georgia Tech Invitational.

Sophomore Joseph Keitt also picked up a win as he bested the field in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:14.18 which ranks as the top time by a Chanticleer this season.

CCU’s board of trustees rescinded its decision directing the University administration to identify $1 million in savings from the University’s 2013-2014 budget. The decision by the board gives CCU President David A. DeCenzo and the University administration the opportunity to preserve programs identified to be eliminated or restructured, including academic centers and programs as well as the men’s cross country and track and field program, which had been scheduled to be discontinued after the 2013-2014 season.

The board cited favorable retention forecasts for the upcoming fall semester as the major reason for the decision. More than 65 percent of CCU’s present freshman class has reenrolled for the fall 2103 semester. At its February meeting, the board had directed the administration to identify $1 million in savings from the institution’s budget as an economic savings measure.

The women were led by senior Erica Peake who finished third in the women’s 100 meter preliminaries with a time of 11.72. She will advance to the finals on Saturday. Sophomore Symphony Thompson finished 18th in the event with a time of 12.16 while sophomore Ruby Durham placed 23rd while clocking in at 12.26.

Sophomore Joseph Wilson came just .03 seconds away from tying the CCU school record in the 100 meters with a time of 10.57 in the preliminaries. He placed eighth overall and will compete in the finals on Saturday. Junior Ronnie Jackson came in 28th with a time of 10.80 while sophomore Eric Brown came in 43rd while posting a time of 11.02.

Freshman Amirah Al-Bayyinah placed 16th in the women’s long jump with the second best distance by a Chant this season (5.75 meters). Sophomore Christina Davis placed ninth in the 100 meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 13.95 while freshman Jessica Gelibert and sophomore Camille Hurley placed 13th and 14th, respectively. Gelibert came across the line at 14.24 while Hurley posted a time of 14.54.

Junior Cameron Griggs came in eighth in the men’s shot put with a distance of 15.14 meters (49-08.25) while junior Chris Tillotson came in 10th in the men’s javelin with a throw of 51.48 meters (168-11).

The Chants will return to action tomorrow as they continue to compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational.
