CCU ranked in another poll; Paez earns more accolades

ccubase-Michael Paez vs Radford 2The Coastal Carolina baseball team opens the 2016 season in 25 days and will host Appalachian State (Feb. 19) as the #23 team in the nation according to Baseball America, which released its 2016 Preseason Top 25 Monday.

Also on that opening weekend, the Chanticleers will host North Carolina State – ranked 19th in the Baseball American Preseason Top 25 – on Feb. 20 and welcome defending national champion Virginia – ranked 4th by Baseball America – on Feb. 21. The only other CCU opponent to make the Baseball America Preseason Top 25 is #24 Mississippi. The Chants will host the Rebels on Mar. 5 as part of the Chanticleer Classic.

This is only the second time since 2005 Coastal Carolina has been ranked in the Baseball America Preseason Top 25. The only other occasion came in 2010 when the publication tabbed the Chanticleers 12th.

Coastal has been represented in each of the four preseason polls released to date as Collegiate Baseball put CCU 33rd, D1Baseball.com put the Chants 24th and PerfectGame.org selected Coastal 21st.

* The preseason honors for Coastal Carolina’s Michael Paez continued Monday as the junior shortstop was selected third team preseason All-American by D1Baseball.com. Previously, the Miami native (Sunset HS) was tabbed first team All-American by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball and second team by PerfectGame.org.

Paez was named first team All-Big South and second team American Baseball Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region last season. He batted .326 for the Chanticleers last season with 17 doubles, eight home runs, 58 runs scored, 42 RBI, a .526 slugging percentage and a .436 on base percentage. He additionally helped CCU rank second in the NCAA in turning 66 double plays.

He continued his solid play last summer as he was a Cape Cod All-Star and named to the Cape Cd Year-end All-League Team as he led the Cotuit Kettleers in batting average (.295), runs scored (17), hits (38), doubles (7), walks (21) and stolen bases (8).
