Chants looking for end zone; USC, Tigers host league foes

Someone may want to check the gender and species of Chauncey the Chanticleer, because lately he/she has been laying a lot of goose eggs.

For the past six quarters, Coastal Carolina’s side of the scoreboard has displayed more zeroes than Warren Buffett’s tax return.

Six, to be exact, but four of those were against the mighty Jawja Dawgs. Of course, the first two came against not-so mighty Catawba College.

Saturday’s opponent, North Carolina A&T, ranks somewhere in between, but a lot closer to Catawba than Georgia. The once-proud program has struggled in recent years but has turned to first-year coach Ron Broadway to put the Aggies back on terra firma.

But you can’t win if you don’t score, and the Chants are going to have to crank up some offense to come back from Greensboro with a victory.
Look for Coastal QB Aramis Hillary to get the offense rolling against the Aggies. … Coastal Carolina 31, N.C. A&T 6.

* Vanderbilt at South Carolina: If the Gamecocks need a reminder about what happens when you take an opponent lightly, the black-and-gold should jog their memories.

In recent years Vanderbilt has twice knocked off a Steve Spurrier-led South Carolina squad that had higher aspirations until the Commodores intervened.
Vanderbilt is off to a 3-0 start and brings a battle-tested bunch to Columbia. The rush defense has been superb this season, but they haven’t tried to tackle Marcus Lattimore yet.

The Gamecocks are still looking to play their first complete game of the season after squeaking past Georgia and Navy by field goals. Look for them to put it all together against the ‘Dores. … South Carolina (-16) 27, Vanderbilt 13.

* Florida State at Clemson: For the past seven meetings this game has come down to geography. The home team is 7-0. We’ll see if that trend continues in the first Bowden-less Bowl at Death Valley.

The Tigers turned it up a notch in last week’s comeback victory over defending national champion Auburn while the Seminoles saw the Boomer Schooner roll on their own home turf.

How Florida State handles the loss will go a long way toward determining this one. If Clemson closes as strongly as it did last week, the Seminoles could easily unravel. … Clemson (-2.5) 34, Florida State 23.

Last week: 3-0 straight up, 1-2 against the spread. Overall: 9-0 straight up; 3-3-1 against the spread.
