CCU seniors cap careers with record-setting finale

ccufoot-deangleo-henderson-vs-hamptonDe’Angelo Henderson ended his spectacular career with 135 rushing yards while fellow All-American candidate Alex Scearce set a CCU season record for sacks to lead #15 Coastal Carolina to a 26-7 victory over Hampton Saturday afternoon at Brooks Stadium in the teams’ 2016 season finales.

Coastal Carolina ends the season with a 10-2 record, marking just the fourth 10-win season in CCU’s history and the third under fifth-year head coach Joe Moglia. Prior to the game, Coastal honored its 20 seniors, who won their 43rd game over a four-season span to set a CCU record and be just the one of three teams to win as many as 43 FCS games over the last four seasons.

Henderson had 22 carries for 135 yards with a score and added two receptions for 40 yards. He ends his career with 4,635 rushing yards and 57 rushing yards while accumulating 64 total touchdowns.

Scearce finished with eight tackles with 2.5 for losses, including a sack. He ends the season with a CCU record 8.0 sacks and is second on the CCU season list with 13.5 tackles for losses.

In addition to big days by Henderson and Scearce, Ryan Granger made four field goals to tie a CCU single-game record.

With his TD today, Henderson ends his career by extending his own NCAA Division I record with at least one touchdown in 35 consecutive games. (He broke the FCS record – previously held by Monmouth’s David Sinisi – by scoring a TD in 26 consecutive games last season and surpassed the all-time Division I record –previously held by Virginia Tech’s Lee Suggs – earlier this season versus Florida A&M by scoring in 28 straight games.)

Hampton started the game moving the ball nicely, but ultimately the drive stalled and ended on a missed 52-yard field goal. From that point, Henderson took over as he gained 59 yards one six attempts, including a 30-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

On Hampton’s second possession, CCU senior Kamron Summers picked off a pass, the sixth of his career. (He added one later in the game to seal the win.)  While CCU’s drive stalled, Ryan Granger came on to make a 26-yard field goal for a 10-0 CCU lead.

Granger then made it three possessions and three scores as he split the uprights from 30 yards out for a 13-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

One play after ensuing kickoff, Anthony Chesley picked off his second pass of the season to give CCU the ball on the Hampton 30. Coastal was kept out of the end zone, but not off the scoreboard as Granger made a 25-yard field goal to put the Chants up 16-0.

On the first play of the fourth quarter and facing 4th-and-13, the Pirates lined up for a 52-yard field goal. However, holder Christian Faber-Kinney kept the ball and raced 34 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown to cut the Hampton deficit to nine, 16-7.

However, on the ensuing kickoff, Ky’Jon Tyler fielded the ball on his own 23 and tip-toed down the sideline for a 77-yard kick return to regain a 16-point lead, 23-7.

Granger provided the 26-7 final with a 20-yard field goal, tying Josh Hoke for the CCU record that was set versus Elon in 2006.
