CCU soccer cracks top 10; Ribeiro nets national honor

After winning its sixth straight game to run its overall record to 7-2-0, the Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team has cracked the top 10 in the College Soccer News Top 30 National Poll for the first time this season.

In addition, senior midfielder Pedro Ribeiro earned his second National Team of the Week honor of the season from the publication.

Last season, Coastal ranked as high as ninth by College Soccer News on two separate occasions and topped out at eighth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll heading into the Big South Tournament.

The Chanticleers earned a hard-fought 2-1 double overtime victory at High Point last Saturday in their only game of the week. The win kept Coastal perfect in Big South Conference play with a 3-0-0 record and a league-leading nine points. Moreover, the win was the Chanticleers’ 22nd straight in Big South regular season matches and pushed the program’s conference regular season unbeaten streak to 23 games (22-0-1). Coupled with Akron’s loss to Mid-American Conference member Hartwick on Saturday, the Chanticleers currently own the nation’s longest winning and unbeaten streak in regular season conference games.

Ribeiro, a Preseason All-American, was the man of the match against High Point as he scored the game-winner with 6:18 remaining in the second overtime on a free kick from 35 yards out. The Brazilian launched his scoring strike over a wall of High Point defenders and into the left upper 90. The goal was Ribeiro’s sixth of the season and his 10th career game-winner. The senior now has 26 career goals to go along with 19 assists for 71 total points. He is four goals, two assists and seven points shy of entering the CCU all-time top-10 lists.

Ribeiro earned his first National Team of the Week award of the season for the week ending Sept. 15 after netting a trio of goals that led to two Chanticleer wins.

Goalkeeper Devin Cook has also earned National Team of the Week plaudits this season after helping the Chants to 1-nil victory over then eighth-ranked VCU.

Coastal continues its current two-game road stand at College of Charleston on Tuesday. The Chants and Cougars are slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff at the Patriots Point Soccer Stadium in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Coastal holds a 14-9-4 all-time series lead against its Lowcountry rivals, including wins in each of the sides’ last two meetings.
