CCU soccer jumps to No. 12; goalkeeper Cook honored

Following back-to-back road wins, the Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team surged to No. 12 in the College Soccer News poll and goalkeeper Devin Cook was named the Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Cook is the second Chanticleer to earn Defensive Player of the Week plaudits this season as Shawn McLaws garnered the honor last week. Additionally, Cook is the second Chant to be named to the College Soccer News National Team of the week, joining Pedro Ribeiro who earned the recognition a week ago.

Cook, a sophomore from Simi Valley, Calif., notched 180:00 of shutout soccer to lead Coastal Carolina to a Big South win as well as a win over No. 5 Virginia Commonwealth last week. He got his week started with three saves as the Chanticleers downed Presbyterian College 4-0 on Sept. 17. Four days later at VCU, Cook turned away four attacks to help Coastal Carolina knock off the Rams, 1-0.

Cook’s biggest save of the week, and the season, came in the 38th minute at VCU. Following a Coastal foul in the box, Cook faced a VCU penalty kick by Dennis Castillo. Cook read Castillo’s penalty attempt perfectly making a move to his left to easily smother the shot.

The Chanticleers, winners of their last four matches, own a 5-2-0 overall record. Coastal has played five nationally ranked opponents in their first seven games and have gone an impressive 3-2-0 with each victory coming on the road.

Coastal’s most recent win over a ranked opponent came on Saturday, Sept. 21 at fifth-ranked VCU. Ricky Garbanzo scored in the first minute of play and the Chanticleer defense clamped down en route to the 1-0 upset.

Coastal posted a 4-0 win last week at Presbyterian College in both team’s Big South opener. The win was Coastal’s 20th straight in Big South regular season competition. The Chants last lost a Big South regular season game on Oct. 27, 2010 — a span of 1,062 days and 21 matches.
