CCU soccer opens league play with win over G-W

No. 25-ranked Coastal Carolina’s TeeJay East recorded an assist and a goal within seven minutes of each other to help the Chanticleers defeat Gardner-Webb 3-1 in the Big South Conference opener Friday night at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field.

With tonight’s game Coastal Carolina head coach Shaun Docking recorded his 272nd coached game, moving him into first place for the most games coached in CCU history.

Defender Cyprian Hedrick recorded the opening goal of the evening on a cross from the left side of the field by Jordan Schmoker into the box where a running Hedrick headed the ball into the back of the net to give Coastal the early advantage in the 32nd minute. However, it was a short lived lead as Gardner-Webb answered twenty four seconds later as John Sargent took the ensuing kick-off down the field where he fired a low lying shot that found it’s way through the Coastal defense and rolled into the back of the net.

With Coastal continuing to control the ball and the score knotted at one apiece, East crossed a well played ball to Pedro Ribeiro where he sent the ball past the Gardner-Webb keeper, giving Coastal a 2-1 halftime advantage.

After a back and forth opening second half, Coastal mid fielder Shawn McLaws gathered a Gardner-Webb goal kick at mid-field where he one touched it to East, who ripped a shot past a charging keeper to give the Chants a 3-1 lead.

“I was delighted to get the win today against a very tough Gardner-Webb team,” Docking said “I think they (Gardner-Webb) are going to win a lot of games this year. Overall I was very pleased with our effort, especially in the second half tonight.”

Docking also cited Hedrick for his excellent play on the defensive side of the ball. Hedrick made some key blocks, holding the Runnin’ Bulldogs to eight shots compared to the Chants 13.

Each keeper recorded two saves while Gardner-Webb was charged with 13 fouls to Coastal’s nine.

Gardner-Webb’s Ernesto Gaita recorded the only yellow card in the game, coming in the 12th minute.

Coastal returns to the pitch next Wednesday, September 28 to face UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Field.
