CCU, Soderberg in second at Big South Championship

The Coastal Carolina men’s golf team got off to a quick start, but, as did the rest of the field, struggled on the final nine holes to stand in second at the 2013 Big South Championships, played at the par 72, 7,120-yard Patriot Club at Grand Harbour in Ninety-Six, SC.

The Chanticleers finished the first round with an 8-over par 296, two shots behind defending champions Liberty (294). Winthrop trails Liberty and Coastal with an 11-over 299.

Individually, 38th-ranked Sebastian Soderberg is in second with a 1-under 71 after 18 holes, one shot behind leader Max McKay (70) from Liberty. The Chants also have Ben Wheeler in a three-way tie for fifth with a 1-over par 73, while Andrew Dorn is in a tie for 11th with a 3-over 75.

As a team, Coastal made the turn at 4-under par but were 12-over on the back. First round leader Liberty was 7-over on the back nine, while third-place Winthrop was 11-over on the inward nine.

Soderberg may have handled the back nine the best Sunday, shooting a 1-under 35. He was 1-over par through five holes before going birdie, bogey, birdie to get the even for the day. The senior would par the par 4 ninth and started his back nine with a birdie on the par 4 10th. Soderberg ended his day with eight straight pars for his 1-uver 71. This marks the third consecutive year Soderberg has opened the Big South Championship with a 71.

Wheeler birdied two of his first five holes, but suffered a bogey on the par 4 sixth. The sophomore bounced back to birdie the par 3 seventh to make the turn at 2-under. Wheeler would get as low 3-uder after birdie on the 12th hole. However, he would bogey the 14th, bogey the 17th and double bogey the 18th for his 1-over 73.

Dorn started with bogies on two of his first three holes. However, he would birdie hole 4 and hole 8 to get back to even par. He would par seven of his last 10 holes with bogeys on holes 11, 13 and 16 to finish a 3-over 75.

Peter Valasek was in good shape through 13 holes, standing at 2-under par, but finished his day with three bogeys and two doubles for his 77 to stand in a tie for 24th. Roberto Ballesteros is tied for 41st with a first round 82.

Round two of three of the Big South Championship will be Monday with CCU starting at 9:20 am.
