CCU picks Byrd, Harris for Sasser Sports Hall of Fame

byrdThe Coastal Carolina Department of Athletics announces that Zack Byrd (golf) and Joseph Harris (basketball) will be the members of the George F. “Buddy” Sasser Athletics Hall of Fame’s Class of 2015.

Byrd and Harris will be officially inducted as the Hall’s 25th class on the morning of Nov. 7, prior to the Coastal Carolina football game against Gardner-Webb (2 p.m.), and then recognized during a halftime ceremony.

Byrd, who hails from Calabash, NC, played golf from 2005-09. He was a two-time All-American Third Team member in 2009 (PING/GCAA and Golfweek), a two-time PING/GCAA All-Region selection (2007 and 2009) the Big South Golfer of the Year in 2009, and a two-time individual medalist at Big South Championship (2005 and 2009).

The three-time All-Big South honoree (2005, 2007 and 2009) holds the Coastal Carolina record for lowest single-round score with 63 at 2009 Desert Shootout and tied for second in lowest 54-hole tournament total (201). He ranks fourth at Coastal Carolina in career scoring average (50 rounds minimum) at 73.54, and third in single-season scoring average (20 rounds minimum) at 72.58 in 2008-09. He was also a two-time GCAA All-America Scholar (2007 and 2009)

Harris of Lejeune, NC, played basketball (2005-10) and became the only player in Big South history with 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 steals, 100 blocked shots and 100 assists. He holds the Big South record with 1,152 rebounds. Thetwo-time first team All-Big South selection (2008-09 and 2009-10) is Coastal Carolina’s career leader in games played (134), field goal percentage (.562) and rebounds. He also ranks in the top 10 in scoring (ninth), field goals made (fifth), field goals attempted (10th), free throws made (10th), free throws attempted (fourth), rebounding average (fourth), blocks (second) and steals (second).
