CCU voted to win 2013 Big South Championship

For the first time since the 2006 season, defending Conference co-champion Coastal Carolina University has been tabbed the favorite in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason football poll for the 2013 campaign, as voted by the League’s head coaches and media panel.

The Chanticleers enter the 2013 campaign with 50 letter winners returning, including 22 starters. CCU, led by second-year head coach Joe Moglia finished the 2012 season 8-5 overall and 5-1 in conference play to receive the Big South’s automatic,c bid to the preseason.

Coach Moglia, speaking at the Big South Football Kickoff Media day in Charlotte, NC said “We still have to prove ourself. During the Spring practice, we had 17 players that didn’t play because they had been injured or banged up. So, I’m a little worried about our overall depth and I think it’s our job as a coaching staff to find the balance to bring our guys along and help them to improve as a football team and keep them healthy. I think if you do a good job on our end and we can keep our guys healthy, then we can have a good season.”

CCU, ranked 15th nationally by Lindy’s, received nine of 15 first-place votes cast and 84 total points to win the Big South football championship this season.

2013 Preseason Poll

1. Coastal Carolina (9)
2. Liberty (6)
3. Gardner-Webb
4. Charleston Southern

T-6. Presbyterian
