CCU women’s soccer remains winless on the season

The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team was unable to preserve an early lead as High Point netted three second-half goals to down the Chanticleers by a 4-1 final on Saturday evening at the Panthers’ Vert Stadium.

High Point’s Brooke Lisson found the net for the eventual game winner off a free kick in the 14th minute of the second half.  After a Coastal foul just outside the right side of the ’18 box, Lisson lofted the free kick high towards the far post.  The ball would travel past the outstretched arms of Chanticleer keeper Saundra Baron and kiss off the crossbar before connecting with the net for Lisson’s second goal of the year.

The Panthers scored twice more before time expired to provide the 4-1 final.  The first of which resulted in a header by Katie Taber off a cross by Kelli Joline.  High Point’s final goal came from the foot of Cary Parrish as she beat Baron one-on-one to the left post.

Coastal struck first in the match as freshman Kacey Kelley found nylon in the 19th minute of the contest for the first goal of her collegiate career.  Kelley’s goal was a production of a free kick taken by sophomore Alyssa Clark.  Kelley was able to get a foot on the ball and launch it to the far left post to give the Chanticleers the early 1-nil lead.

High Point would find the equalizer in the 36th minute as a Coastal foul inside the box gave the Panthers a penalty kick.  Joline converted the penalty opportunity for her fourth goal of the season.

Coastal would have an opportunity late in the first half to regain the lead as sophomore Hannah Brown, an All-Big South Tournament selection a year ago, sent a blast towards goal that would be saved by the Panthers’ Andrea Ritchie.  Brown would have another shot thwarted by Ritchie in the second half.

The Chants connected on seven shots throughout the match, including five in the second stanza.  Three of Coastal’s shot attempts came from the boot of Brown as Maggie McGavin, Morgan Thomas, Jessie Benchley and Kelley each recorded one. Both teams finished with three corners through the run of play.

Baron picked up four saves in the contest to bring her season total to 38 through 920 minutes of play.

The Chanticleers will return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 6 as hosts to Radford at 6 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Field.
