CCU’s Backus gets Big South defensive honors in VMI win

For the third time this season, Coastal Carolina linebacker Quinn Backus has been named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week.

Backus, for the fourth time this season, led the team in tackles as the Chanticleer defense put together one of its all-time top performances. Backus tallied nine tackles, including six in the second half, with a sack during the first drive of the third quarter. The sack would eventually lead to a punt, which CCU blocked and returned for a touchdown.

Overall, Backus helped Coastal’s defense hold VMI to just 16 rushing yards (0.6 average) and just 252 yards of total offense. The 16 rushing yards is the second-fewest yards CCU has allowed in school history as Chowan only managed eight in 2007. Coastal’s defense forced VMI to punt on each of its first seven possessions – eight overall, and forced two turnovers on downs before the Keydets scored on their final drive with 32 seconds left in the game.

Backus has 75 tackles in seven games this season and his average of 10.71 tackles per game ranks second in the Big South and 13th in the nation. At his current pace, Backus will finish with 118 tackles, which would break Jamar Leath’s CCU single-season record of 116 tackles in a season (205).

This marks the third time in Coastal history a Chanticleer defender has earned the league’s weekly honor three times in a season. Three-time first team All-Big South honorees Maurice Simpkins (2003) and Leath (2005) were the other two Chants to accomplish the feat.

Kickoff for Saturday’s Homecoming contest, presented by Carolina Trust, with Liberty is set for 3:30 pm. Rally towels will be given away at the gates of Brooks Stadium.
