CCU’s Dorn makes return to Pinehurst No. 2 at US Open

ccugolf-andrew dorn hackler 2 4 (2)Andrew Dorn, a rising senior with the Coastal Carolina men’s golf program, earned a berth to the 2014 U.S. Open, played June 12-15 at historic Pinehurst No.2 Golf Course.

Dorn was the number three overall alternate after sectional qualifying and was extended an invitation by the United States Golf Association (USGA) on June 4 after Thomas Bjorn withdrew due to injury.

Dorn will not be the only participant with Coastal Carolina ties in this year’s Open field as three-time All-American Dustin Johnson will be playing in his sixth national championship. Johnson was a member of the Chanticleer golf program from 2003-2007.

Dorn – with professionals Cody Gribble and Chris Thompson – will tee off on the first on hole in the opening round Thursday at 2:42 pm. The following day, he will start on hole 10 with an 8:57 am tee time. Johnson will tee off at 1:03 pm off hole number one on Thursday and start round two Friday on hole 10 at 7:18 am.

Last summer, Dorn won the 113th Men’s North & South Amateur Championship which is played annually at Pinehurst No. 2. One of the perks for winning that prestigious event is Dorn having a permanent locker in the clubhouse with such greats as Francis Ouimet, Walter Travis, George Dunlap, Jack Nicklaus, Curtis Strange, Hal Sutton, Corey Pavin and Davis Love III to name a few.

To reach this year’s U.S. Open, Dorn shot a course-record 66 at Cincinnati’s Maketewa Country Club to win a U.S. Open Local Qualifier (May 13). He advanced to a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier (June 2) in Springfield, Ohio, where he placed fourth (top three earned automatic berths to U.S. Open) with a score of 3-under par 137 (70-67). He was the number one alternate from the Springfield Sectional and the USGA had him ranked third among all the alternates from the various Sectionals.

A native of West Chester, Ohio, Dorn is a two-time All-Big South honoree. He led the Chanticleers with a 73.28 scoring average this past season. He was the team’s top finisher in five of 11 events, including four of the team’s six spring events.  He was the first Chanticleer to take medalist honors in the program’s own General Hackler Championship. After an impressive spring, Dorn earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Raleigh Regional, where he placed 15th with a score of 1-over par 214 (78-69-67).
