CCU’s Dorn wins North & South Amateur golf event

Coastal Carolina rising junior Andrew Dorn cruised in his semifinal match (5&4) and held on in the final (1 up) Saturday to win one of the nation’s most prestigious events – the 113th North & South Amateur Championship, played at historic Pinehurst No. 2.

The North & South Amateur Championship is the longest consecutive running amateur championship in the United States and lays claim to such champions as Francis Ouimet, Walter Travis, George Dunlap, Jack Nicklaus, Curtis Strange, Hal Sutton, Corey Pavin and Davis Love III to name a few.

After needing extra holes in the first two rounds of match play, Dorn raced out to a 6 up lead through eight holes in the semifinal match Saturday morning. Both players took pars on the first two holes before Dorn won six straight by registering four pars and two birdies from the third hole to the eighth hole to take his commanding lead. He lost a stroke on the par-4 13th hole as Max Greyserman birdied. However, with Dorn up five, the two both carded a par on the 14th hole which sealed the match with Dorn up five with four holes left to play.

In the afternoon final, Dorn faced Zachary Bauchou in a back-and-forth match. Dorn took an early lead by winning the fifth hole with a par. Bauchou squared the match with a par on the seventh hole. Dorn then took a 2 up lead with a birdie on the 490-yard, par-4 8th and a par on the 190-yard, par-3 ninth. He would stretch his advantage to 3 up with a par on the 486-yard, par-4 11th hole. Bauchou got that stroke back on the 12th with a par but Dorn would once again lead 3 up with a birdie on the par-4 14th hole. Bouchou battled back with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to leave Dorn with a 1 up lead. On the final hole, both players carded a bogey five to give Dorn the championship.

Dorn was the 16th after tying for 13th after the stroke play portion on Pinehurst No. 4 of the North & South Amateur, shooting 210 (70-69-71). Dorn won his round of 16 contest in the opening round of match play in 20 holes. He additionally needed 20 holes to win his quarterfinal match.

Dorn is coming off a solid sophomore campaign, earning All-Big South honors and ranking second on the team with a season scoring average of 73.87.
