CCU’s Frawley named BSC Student-Athlete of the Year

Coastal Carolina’s Tucker Frawleyhas been named the 2011-12 Big South Conference Male Student-Athlete of the Year, as voted upon by the league’s sports information directors, while Gardner-Webb’s Jane Savage (softball) was the female honoree.

Frawley (Lexington, S.C.) is the fourth Coastal Carolina student-athlete to win the award in the last six years and is the third consecutive Big South baseball player to be honored. In the 16-year history of the award in the Big South Conference, a Coastal Carolina student-athlete has received the prestigious honor a league-record seven times on the men’s side, including Chanticleers Tomas Malik (1995-96 and 1996-97), Chris Malinky (1999-2000), Josh Hoke (2006-07), Jack Leasure (2007-08) and Austin Fleet (2009-10).

A Capital One/CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-America in 2012, Frawley graduated magna cum laude in May with a 3.94 grade-point average in physics. He is a two-time Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and two-time member of the Big South Baseball All-Academic Team.

Frawley was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the eighth round of the 2012 Major League Draft and was a semifinalist for the 2012 Johnny Bench Award, which goes to the nation’s top collegiate catcher. He earned first team All-Big South honors this past season as he threw out 25 of 51 base runners (49 percent) and also picked off seven runners as Coastal Carolina led the Big South in pickoffs.

Frawley reached base safely in 52 of 60 games played, caught an amazing 89.8 percent of the innings this season and handled a young pitching staff that led the NCAA in ERA seven times during the 2012 campaign, finishing third nationally. At the plate, Frawley batted .296 with 25 runs scored, 27 RBI and posted a .411 on-base percentage.

A Coastal Carolina student-athlete has been the Big South’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year a record 10 times in the league’s 16-year history of the award.
