CCU’s Gilbert duo sweeps Big South weekly awards

ccubase-25Coastal Carolina senior outfielder Connor Owings (Gilbert, S.C.) has been named the Big South Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Chanticleer senior right-hander Mike Morrison (Gilbert, S.C.) has been named The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week for games played during the final week of the regular season, it was announced today by the Conference office.

Owings posted a hitless outing in a nonconference contest with UNC Wilmington on Tuesday, but bounced back in a conference series with Campbell, as he went 8-for-9 (.889) with five RBI and seven runs scored. The outfielder capped off last week with a 3-for-3 performance including four RBI and a home run to help clinch the sweep over the Camels on Saturday.

In the series opener on Thursday, he finished 4-for-4 with a trio of runs scored and swiped three bags to led the Chants past CU, 9-1. In game two, Owings tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning in a game CCU won 6-5 in the ninth. The senior closed last week with a 1.250 slugging percentage and a .778 on-base mark.

Owings is the first Chanticleer and third Big South hitter to be a Big South Player of the Week three times in one season. He joins CCU pitchers Scott Sturkie (2001), Cody Wheeler (2009) and Anthony Meo (2011) as the only Chanticleers to be a three-time honoree in a single season. Other Big South player to be the hitter of the week three times in one season include Ryan Moffett (UNC Asheville in 1999) and Alex Tomasovich (Charleston Southern in 2014).

Morrison picked up a win and a save within Coastal’s perfect 4-0 week last week. On Tuesday, the right-hander earned a three-inning save in CCU’s 4-1 victory over UNC Wilmington. He followed that performance with a scoreless top of the ninth inning, which led to the Chants’ walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth over Campbell on Friday.

Also nominated for Player of the Week: Anthony Lopez (Campbell), Hunter Lee (High Point) and Cletis Avery (Presbyterian College).

Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week: Brian Kehner (Presbyterian College) and Mitchell MacKeith (Radford).
