CCU’s Morrison heads to Kannapolis for pro debut

MikeThe Kannapolis Intimidators, Class A Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, have received national champion and Coastal Carolina standout Mike Morrison. The right-handed pitcher was selected by the White Sox in the 27th round of this June’s First-Year Player Draft two weeks before leading the Chanticleers to their first NCAA Championship in school history. In a corresponding move, the Intimidators have promoted reliever Drew Hasler to Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem.

Morrison, 22, made 34 appearances for the Chanticleers during the 2016 season with his only start of the year coming in Omaha during the College World Series Final against the Arizona Wildcats. Facing elimination, Morrison threw a career high 6 and 2/3 innings and matched a College World Series finals record 10 strikeouts to help Coastal Carolina force a deciding Game 3. It was just the third start of his college career for the usual closer of the Chants who went 8-1 with a 1.50 ERA, 11 saves, in 72 innings of work while striking out 94 and walking just two.

Coastal Carolina earned their first trip to Omaha for the College World Series in school history as an unranked team. Following a shutout loss to Arizona, 3-0, in game one of the Finals, the Chanticleers rallied to win back-to-back one-run games against the Wildcats to capture the College World Series Championship, delivering the school its first NCAA title on June 30.

Morrison was one of two Chanticleers to be selected by the Chicago White Sox this year, joining teammate Zach Remillard who was taken in the 10th round of the draft. Morrison joins Jacob May (2013) and Casey Schroeder (2016) as the third Coastal Carolina product to join the Intimidators in the last four seasons.
