CCU’s Renwick sinks 30-foot putt to win Charleston event

Coastal Carolina men’s golfer Easton Renwick carded two career-low rounds and finished in a three-way tie for first – winning the playoff by sinking a 30-foot putt on the third hole – at the Charleston Shootout, played Monday and Tuesday at the par 72, 6,756-yard Links at Stono Ferry.

Renwick, playing as an individual, is the first Chanticleer to win an event since Sebastian Soderberg won the 2012 Furman Intercollegiate and just the second Chant to win an event since 2009.

Also shooting 216 and participating in the playoff were Clemson’s Hayden Garrett (76-67-73) and College of Charleston’s John Duke Hudson (74-68-74).

Renwick carded a career-low, 4-under par 68 in the opening round Monday, tying for sixth-best single round on the CCU single round and tying for the fourth-best overall round. The sophomore played a portion of his second round Monday before darkness halted play. He finished his second round Tuesday with a 1-under par 71, which tied his previous best-career round. He shot a final round 77 for a 54-hole score of 216.

Renwick started each round on hole number five and birdied the hole in each of his three rounds. In round one, after the birdie, he posted a bogey on his second hole. He proceeded to reel off six birdies over his next 11 holes and would end his round with bogeys on his 16th and 18th holes.

In round two, he offset four bogeys with four birdies before carding a birdie on his 17th hole, the 406-yard, par 4 third hole. His final 18 holes was an up-and-down round as he had four birdies and four bogeys, but added a triple bogey and a double bogey.

Kevin Vanden Heuvel joined Renwick as Coastal’s only other participant at the Charleston Shootout. The junior tied for 39th with a 12-over par 228 (77-74-77).

The Coastal Carolina men’s golf team will return to action this Monday and Tuesday (Mar. 11-12) as it hosts the annual General Hackler Championships. The event will return to TPC Myrtle Beach this year after playing at DeBordieu Club in Pawley’s Island last spring. The 2013 Championship field includes host Coastal Carolina, Arkansas, Charleston Southern, East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast, Gardner-Webb, Kent State, Lamar, Middle Tennessee State, Tennessee and UTEP.
