CCU’s Ross adds academic honors to athletic success

ccufoot-4runCoastal Carolina quarterback Alex Ross was named to the NCAA Division I Academic All-District 4 team, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Ross graduated cum laude (3.57 GPA) from Coastal Carolina with a degree in management in December 2014. He is currently pursuing his Master of Business Administration, has a 4.0 in his graduate studies and is scheduled to graduate this December. By virtue of his selection to the All-District 4 team, Ross will be eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America squad, which will be announced Dec. 3.

Ross is a candidate for the National Offensive Player of the Year this season. He has led Coastal Carolina to a 7-1 record and the Chanticleers were ranked #1 in the nation for eight weeks. In fact, Coastal Carolina has been ranked among the nation’s top 10 in 34 of the last 35 ranking periods with the lone exception of CCU being ranked 11th in the final week of the regular season in 2013 – Ross’ sophomore season. Ross is 10th in the NCAA FCS in completion percentage and leads the Big South in passing efficiency, passing yards per attempt and passing touchdowns. He also leads a Chanticleer offense that ranks among the FCS top 30 in 12 categories.

Ross, who is 31-6 as Coastal’s starting signal-caller, finished seventh in the 2014 Walter Payton Award voting, was the 2014 Big South Offensive Player of the Year and finished second to teammate Quinn Backus for the 2014-15 Howard Bagwell Big South Male Athlete of the Year.

Ross is Coastal Carolina’s all-time leader in pass attempts (1,068), completions (688), passing yards (8,707), passing touchdowns (61), total offense (10,206) and touchdown responsibility (80). He additionally ranks 10th in the CCU all-time list for rushing yards (1,499), fourth in rushing attempts (365) and fifth in rushing touchdowns (19).

On the Big South all-time lists, Ross owns the league records for most games (3) with at least 400 yards of total offense and most games (10) with at least three TD passes. He additionally ranks second in total offense, second in touchdown responsibility, second in touchdown passes, second in most games (14) with at least 300 yards of total offense and third in passing yards.
