CCU’s Schnall recognized by BA as top 10 assistant

Baseball America periodically surveys college coaches to compile a list of 10 assistants with bright futures as head coaches. For the second time, Coastal Carolina associate head coach Kevin Schnall was recognized.

As they have done in the past (the last time being 2012), Baseball America asked current Division I head coaches from around the country to list three top coaching prospects among the ranks of current assistants, excluding their own staffs. More than 75 coaches responded and Schnall ranked sixth among the top 10 vote-getters.

Schnall provided an instant impact in 2016 when he returned to his alma mater after three seasons on the staff at Central Florida and helped Coastal Carolina to its first national championship. Since his return, Coastal was Big South champion and was the 2017 Sun Belt regular season champion.

Schnall is regarded as a top-flight recruiter and hitting coach. In fact, Coastal led the nation in home runs with 96 in 2016 and ranked 24th nationally by 1.19 home runs per game last season. Nine players that were either not drafted to taken after the 39th round out of high school and left Coastal being drafted within the top five rounds. A total of seven Chanticleers that came to Coastal under Schnall’s watch have played Major League Baseball, including David Sappelt, Mike Costanzo, Tommy La Stella, Keith Hessler, Rico Noel, Taylor Motter and Jacob May.

Schnall first made the list at No. 7 prior to the 2013 season – his first at Central Florida – after 12 seasons at Coastal Carolina as an assistant. During his first stint on Coastal’s staff, the Chanticleers recorded 11 NCAA Regional berths, two Super Regional appearances, 10 Big South tournament championships and eight Big South regular season titles.

Coastal will open the season Feb. 16-19 with the 18th Annual Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach. Coastal play its season opener versus Virginia Tech with Indiana, Oklahoma, South Alabama and Kansas State also participating. The fields for the remaining three events include the likes of VCU, West Virginia, Illinois, Maryland, Ball State, Radford, High Point and Ohio State. The dates for the remaining three events are Feb. 23-25, Mar. 2-4 and Mar. 9-11.
