CCU’s Wheeler, Dorn make top-10 finishes at Sea Best

ccugolf-wheelerkneelingCoastal Carolina seniors Ben Wheeler and Andrew Dorn each posted top 10 finishes and the men’s golf team placed ninth at the annual Sea Best Invitational, played at the par 70, 6,873-yard Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass.

This marks the first time a pair of Chants finished among the top 10 in a 54-hole, regular-season event since March 2013 when Sebastian Soderberg and Wheeler accomplished the feat at the Seminole Invitational. (Note: At last year’s Big South Championship, Wheeler was the individual medalist and Dorn placed seventh.)

Wheeler, who tied for fourth, recorded his first top 5 finish of the season and fifth of his career while posting his 11th career top 10 finish. Dorn, who tied for seventh, had his second top 10 finish of the season and his 11th top 10 finish for his career.

Wheeler carded a 4-over 74 Tuesday. He finished with a 54-hole total of 216 (70-72-74) and six shots off the lead. After a frost delay to start the final round, the senior opened with a pair of bogeys on holes 7 and 8, standing 5-over par after five holes. However, he birdied the par-4 12th and, after a bogey on hole 1, notched a birdie on the par-3 2nd hole for his 74.

Dorn also posted a final round 4-over par 74 Tuesday thanks to seven bogeys and three birdies. The senior tied for the tournament lead with 10 birdies for the three rounds, including one on his final hole of the event, and played the par-4’s at 3-over par for the event, which tied two others for the best scoring average on the par 4’s.

Josh Pisarri also carded a final round 74, which propelled the sophomore up 21 spots into a tie for 43rd (77-80-74=231). Olle Widegren placed 74th (79-82-80=241) and Ryan carpenter tied for 76th (80-83-81=244).

Coastal Carolina placed ninth in the 15-team field (295-309-302=906) and beat conference foes Liberty and #31 Winthrop. Overall, Coastal was fifth in the 15-team field with 29 combined birdies for the three rounds.

North Carolina, the leader after two rounds, held on for the team title. The 15th-ranked Tar Heels finished with a 54-hole score of 873 (288-296-289). Florida was second (295-293-292=880) followed by #30 UNLV (882), #28 North Florida (884) and #3 Florida State (887).

The Chanticleers will return to Ponte Vedra Feb. 27-Mar. 1 to play in the annual John Hayt Invitaional at Sawgrass Country Club.
