CF claims 10th region title; Braves, Lady Chiefs win 3A

The Carolina Forest girls captured first place in the Class 4A regional swimming championships Saturday, while the North Myrtle Beach girls and Socastee boys won the Class 3A titles at North Myrtle Beach Aquatic Center to advance to the state meet.

In addition to Carolina Forest winning the school’s 10th region title and North Myrtle Beach’s girl four-peating as region champs, both schools’ boys teams finished third in their respective divisions. The Lady Braves placed second for a strong showing for Socastee, while West Florence won the boys’ 4A title.

Carolina Forest’s Brianna Strang claimed individual victories in the 200 and 500 freestyle and she anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay team to victory to lead the Lady Panthers to a dominating performance. Carolina Forest teammates Megan Adair (200 medley) and Courtney Porfilio (100 freestyle) also took individual honors and contributed to relay wins.

The Lady Panthers tallied 159 points, easily beating runner-up Sumter (105), West Florence (90) and South Florence (33).

The North Myrtle Beach girls swam to a similarly easy victory for the fourth consecutive regional title. Barbara Long led the Lady Chiefs with wins in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, and she helped the North Myrtle Beach girls to a win in the 200 freestyle relay. North Myrtle Beach’s Meredith Siler won the 50 freestyle, Mackenzie King took the 500 freestyle and Kaitlyn Buschak took the 100 backstroke to help the Lady Chiefs to victory.

North Myrtle Beach (169) had almost double the points of runner-up Socastee (88). Myrtle Beach (61) finished third, St. James (43) was fourth and Wilson (10) placed fifth.

Socastee’s Walker Harwell won the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley for the boys and Jess Perl claimed the 100 butterfly title to amass 124 points for the overall win.  Wilson (82) was second, with St James (67), North Myrtle Beach (67) and Myrtle Beach (55) rounding out the top five.

The Myrtle Beach girls got a strong efforts from Maggie Lansdale (100 freestyle) and Julia Campbell (100 butterfly), and Seahawks swimmer Jack Cromer won the boys 200 freestyle.

St. James’ Adam Stenger won the 500 freestyle and fellow Shark Danny Quinn claimed the 100 backstroke.
