CF’s Runyon returns home for Kickin’ Chicken Classic

runyonThe Coastal Carolina softball team opens the 2017 season by hosting the Eighth Annual Kickin’ Chicken Classic at the Coastal Carolina Softball Field. But the focus of local fans could be in the other dugout when CCU hosts Alabama on Friday.

That’s because Alabama’ senior infielder Marisa Runyon grew up on the Grand Strand and played high school softball just a couple of miles from campus at Carolina Forest. Her highly anticipated homecoming should attract lots of local fans rooting fro Runyon and the No. 7-ranked Crimson Tide.

Runyon was an all-state player for the Lady Panthers and chose to pass up in-state offers to play for an SEC powerhouse. She has played a major role in leading the Tide to the College World Series last season. She hopes to cap her final season with the ultimate prize of a national title in 2017.

Runyon also looks to cement her place in the program’s record books. She currently ranks sixth all-time in batting with a .635 career slugging percentage. Runyon also is tied for ninth with 33 home runs. Her 139 career RBIs put her 23 shy of cracking the top 10.

The Chants will face Alabama at 3 p.m., followed by a matchup with Youngstown State at 5:30 pm. On Saturday, the Chants will also face Youngstown State at 3 p.m. and Towson at 5:30 p.m. They will close out the tournament on Sunday with a second game featuring Alabama at 12:30 p.m.

The Tide opens the round-robin tourney against Towson at 12:30 p.m. Friday. On Saturday they play Towson again at 10 a.m. and Youngstown State at 12:30 p.m.
