Chanticleers impress in only scrimmage of preseason

The Coastal Carolina football team had its first and only scrimmage of the preseason Friday afternoon at Brooks Stadium, site of the team’s season opener on Sept. 1 versus North Carolina A&T at 6 pm.

The team will have Saturday and Sunday off before beginning classes on Monday.

The team had five segments with two periods of kickoff coverage and kickoff return mixed into the script.

“After seeing the team in a scrimmage format today, we are definitely ahead of where I thought we would be at this point,” said head coach Joe Moglia.  “Our guys really retained a lot of information from the spring.

“After looking at the film from this scrimmage over the next few days, we will have a much better idea of our depth chart on both sides of the ball and begin our specific preparation for the upcoming opponents, starting with North Carolina A&T.”

The first segment had the offense starting on the 25 yard line. On the first snap, Aramis Hillary found Niccolo Mastromatteo down the middle of the field for a 25-yard touchdown. Stephen Denuel added the point after. The unit reset on the 25 and, facing third-and-4, Hillary connected with Tyrell Blanks on a post pattern for a 19-yard score. Grant Clayton came on to convert the extra point. The second unit had its drive stall, setting the stage for a successful 30-yard Denuel field goal. The second unit closed the segment when Cody Craig found Thomas Pauciello streaking along the back of the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown.

The units swapped sides with the offense backed up on its three with the goal to get a first down. A drop on third down on the first series forced a punt. Behind the running of Jeremy Height the offense would pick up a first down the second series. The segment ended when, facing third and short, Hillary executed a play-action pass to an open Pauciello for the first down.

After a kick coverage period, the offense started from its own 35. The first defense forced a three-and-out. The first offense stayed on the field, this time starting from its own 45. However, on the first play, freshman safety Richie Sampson stepped in front of a Hillary pass and returned it six yards. The defense kept the momentum when Dontavais Johnson broke up a pass. The offense got back on track thanks to a 19-yard run by Zach Silverberg and a 22-yard touchdown run by Bucky Kennedy.

The fourth segment had the ball placed on the three yard line, working on short-yardage situations. The first offense ran four plays, scoring twice. First, Hillary connected with Pauciello and later, Height found paydirt. The second unit had two cracks at scoring from the three, getting in once as Silverberg plowed his way over right guard. The third unit was successful on its one try as Alex Ross completed a touchdown pass to Silverberg.

After a kick return period, the scrimmage ended with the offense starting on its own 35. The defense forced a three-and-out. De’Angelo Henderson would get the offense in scoring position with a 20-yard run. Ross then connected with Jake Mooney for 14 yards. However, the defense would finish on a strong note when, facing fourth-and-one, a pass fell incomplete.
