Chanticleers win, advance to Sun Belt title showdown

ccusoc-9The No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina won its first-ever match of the Sun Belt Men’s Soccer Championship with a 2-0 victory against No. 4 seed Hartwick on Friday afternoon at the GSU Soccer Complex.

The Chanticleers (8-6-3), co-champions of the Sun Belt regular season title, advance to Sunday’s championship match. Hartwick (9-6-4), the back-to-back regular-season and tournament champions of the Sun Belt, are eliminated.

Junior Frantzdy Pierrot scored two first-half goals to pace the Chanticleers. His fist tally came in the 37th minute when sophomore Ryan Willoughby served in a ball from the left wing which Pierrot elevated and headed down from the back post into the right side of the net. The goal was Pierrot’s sixth of the season.

Pierrot’s second tally put the Chants up 2-0 just before halftime. The goal came on another header, this time on a delivery from junior Martin Melchor who headed a cross from junior Brennan Koslow. Pierrot’s header just barely cleared the goal line as Hartwick goalkeeper Lenny Wilson dove and nearly saved the ball off the line.

Coastal Carolina junior Braulio Linares-Ortiz made seven saves to improve his record this season to 7-4-3. Hawks’ sophomore Lenny Wilson made five saves and saw his record fall to 7-5-2.

With the win, Coastal Carolina advances to Sunday’s championship match of the Men’s Soccer Championship against No. 3 seed Georgia State, which defeated No. 2 seed Georgia Southern 2-0. Sunday’s championship match will air live on ESPN3 from the GSU Soccer Complex and is set for a 1 p.m. first touch.
