CCU answers wake-up call to take down Toccoa Falls

Leading by just nine points at halftime, the Coastal Carolina men’s basketball team held visiting Toccoa Falls to just two points over the opening 12:53 of the second half. The Eagles ended up with 13 second half points but Coastal put up 41 in the period to take a 75-38 victory.

Senior guard Anthony Raffa led the team with 15 points despite having to sit 13 minutes of the first half due to foul trouble. Sophomore Warren Gillis came one point short of his career-high with 13 points. He also tied a career-high with four steals while adding four rebounds and a pair of assists.

Senior Kierre Greenwood became the 22nd player in Big South history to record 400 career assists. He had eight assists in the game to move his career number to 403. He also added nine points and three steals to his total. Freshman Justin Daniel came off the bench to score nine points and nab four steals.

The Chanticleers shot 52.7 percent from the field but were just 3-14 from 3-point range. They struggled from the charity stripe hitting just 53.8 percent of their attempts. The Eagles shot just 31.4 percent from the field including 17.6 percent in the second half. TFC hit 6-18 from 3-point range and 10-12 from the free throw line.

CCU forced 25 TFC turnovers and used those to take a 33-10 advantage in points off turnovers. The Chants also dominated the paint, outrebounding the Eagles 40-20 and outscoring TFC down low 48-4.

After a game-opening layup by Raffa the Eagles nailed a three and held the lead until the 12:40 mark of the first half. A Charles Ashford layup gave the Chants their second lead of the game at 10-8 with 12:40 remaining. The Eagles kept the first half close due to five 3-pointers and Coastal hitting just 6-14 from the charity stripe.

The second half opened with the Chants going on a 30-2 run. The Eagles made just three field goals the entire second half.

The Chanticleers return to action this Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 7:00 pm as ACC foe Clemson comes to Conway for its first visit to The HTC Center.
