Chants, Beckwith take bite out of Gators in CWS debut

ccubase-cwsbeckwithAndrew Beckwith’s first career complete game came on the college baseballs biggest stage as he led Coastal Carolina to a 2-1 victory over #1 Florida (52-15) in the Chanticleers’ first ever game at the College World Series Sunday night at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.

The Chanticleers (50-16) will now play TCU, who defeated Texas Tech (5-3) in the early game Sunday. CCU and the Horn Frogs are set to square off Tuesday at 9 pm (ET) on ESPN. Coastal will serve as the home team.

While Beckwith was turning in his best career outing, Zach Remillard hit an RBI double and an RBI triple to lead the Chanticleer offense. Anthony Marks and Michael Paez also contributed two hits.

Beckwith improves to 13-1 and tied the CCU single-season record for wins, joining Anthony Meo (2010), Scott Sturkie (2001), Ron Deubel (1999) and Steve Smith (1979). Beckwith only threw 98 pitches – 71 strikes – and did not walk a batter. He retired the last 10 batters he faced, scattered seven hits and struck out seven to tie his career high.

In the top of the third, Coastal was the beneficiary of the first replay in College World Series history. Marks started things with a one-out double. Two batters later, Connor Owings walked. Remillard followed with a fly ball down the right field line, which was originally ruled foul. Upon review, the call was overruled, Remillard was credited with a double and Marks scored from second to give Coastal an early 1-0 lead.

The Gators tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Deacon Lipit lined a one-out double down the right field line and advanced to third on a groundout. Pinch hitter Jeremy Vasquez delivered an RBI single to center to bring home Lipit.

Coastal answered in the top of the sixth. Owings drew a leadoff walk and Remillard drilled a 2-2 pitch off the centerfield wall for an RBI triple, which proved to be the game-winner.

Florida opened the bottom of the sixth with a single, but Beckwith induced a double play. After another single by the Gators, Beckwith struck out Mike Rivera to end the frame as he sat down the last 10 batters he faced.

Coastal had six extra base hits (four doubles and two triples) while Florida only had one double with six singles.

This is the fifth time CCU has won 50 games in one season. Other teams to win at least 50 games include 2005 (50), 2007 (50), 2008 (50) and 2010 (55).
