Chants bounce back with comeback win over Bucs

ccubaseCoastal Carolina was down 3-0 after two innings before hitting home runs in four straight innings to claim a 9-3 victory at Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon. The Chanticleers and the Buccaneers will play the rubber match of the weekend series on Sunday with first pitch set for 2 pm.

The 20th-ranked Chants are 25-15 overall and 17-3 in the Big South. Coastal has a four-game lead over Campbell in the conference standings with four league games left on the schedule – three versus the Camels next week to end the regular season.

Eight Chanticleers had hits with Anthony Marks’ three leading the way. Zach Remillard had four RBI, two hits and hit his Big South-leading 14th home run of the season. David Parrett and Seth Lancaster each had two hits each hitting a home run while G.K. Young hit his 13th home run of the season.

On the mound, CCU starter Andrew Beckwith (9-1) got off to a slow start as he allowed five hits and three runs (one earned) in the first two innings. He also worked his way out of trouble in the third and fourth, allowing two base runners in both innings. The junior allowed a one-out single in the fifth before retiring the last eight batters he faced with three strikeouts. Overall, he scattered nine hits and five walks with five strikeouts.

The Bucs got on the scoreboard in their half of the first. Chris Singleton doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Sly Edwards RBI ground out.

CSU added two runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. The inning began with a CCU error and Ryan Maksim reached on a fielder’s choice. Cole Murphy followed with a double to center field to put runners on second and third. After a ground out, Nate Blanchard lined a two-run double down the left field line.

Coastal answered with four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead. Seth Lancaster laid down a bunt single to start the frame. Lancaster stole second and scored thanks to a Anthony Marks infield single and CSU throwing error. With two out and Marks on second, Connor Owings was hit by a pitch. Zach Remillard then crushed a three-run shot to right center field to give the Chants a 1-0 lead. Remillard has five home runs in his last seven games and a Big South-best 14 for the season.

The Chants pushed their lead to 5-3 in the fourth when Lancaster hit a line drive home run to right field, giving the sophomore five round-trippers this season. The Chants went on to load the bases but CSU right fielder Singleton made a leaping catch on an Owings drive just shy of the warning track.

CCU made it three innings in a row with home run as G.K. Young smacked a solo shot to center field in the top of the fifth to double-up CSU, 6-3. Young now has 13 home runs on the season.

Coastal kept the momentum going with yet another home run in the sixth as David Parrett, who hit 10 home runs last season, smacked his first of the year for a 7-3 lead. It marks the sixth time this season Coastal has hit at least four home runs in a game.

The Chants were retired in order in the seventh, but bounced back to score a run in the eight to lead 8-3. Billy Cooke hit a leadoff single, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by Anthony Marks.

Coastal capped the scoring in the ninth to provide the 9-3 final. Owings drew a leadoff walk and his pinch runner, Dalton Ewing, stole second before scoring on a Remillard single.
