Chants rally past Antelopes, face Anteaters in CIT semis

ccuhoops-Marcus Freeman vs Grand CanyonDuring the final 2:23 of play Elijah Wilson willed Coastal Carolina to a 60-58 victory over Grand Canyon in the quarterfinal round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Wilson’s final 143 seconds featured the Chanticleers’ final eight points, a defensive rebound and a block on a potential game-changing 3-pointer.

The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball will host UC Irvine Sunday at 9 p.m. in a semifinal game of the 2016 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The contest will be televised nationwide on CBS Sports Network. Tickets for the game are $15 for reserved Teal seats, $12 for reserved Bronze section seats, $10 for general admission and $8 for youth (18 and under). All CCU students will be admitted free of charge, compliments of Coastal Carolina University.

The win, which was the third for the Chanticleer program in a postseason tournament, improved Coastal to 21-11 on the season, while Grand Canyon’s season ends at 27-7.

Grand Canyon took a 58-52 lead on Grandy Glaze’s eight bucket of the night with 3:37 to play. Two possessions later Wilson dropped in his second 3-pointer of the day, cutting the Lopes lead to 58-55. Following two missed GCU shots, Wilson worked his way to the free-throw line, making the first and missing the second. However, the ball deflected out of bounds off a GCU player and Wilson sliced to the basket to score on Coastal’s inbounds play to knot the game at 58-58.

On Grand Canyon’s ensuing possession, Wilson blocked Joshua Braun’s 3-point attempt. The Chants brought the ball up the floor and called timeout to set up a final play. The play went to Wilson, who converted a twisting layup in the paint with 2.2 seconds to play, pushing Coastal ahead 60-58. The Chants’ defense finished the game not allowing Grand Canyon a final shot.

Wilson led a trio of Chanticleers in double-figures with his 16 points (5-12 FG, 2-5 3FG, 4-6 FT). Colton Ray-St Cyr and Marcus Freeman joined Wilson with 10 apiece. Tristian Curtis made his impact on the glass with 10 rebounds, while Freeman controlled eight and Ray-St Cyr seven.

Glaze led the Grand Canyon offense with 16 points. Joining Glaze in double-figures was Gerard Martin and DeWayne Russell with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Glaze also led the Lopes with a game-high 13 rebounds.
