Chants drop second series as Eagles win rubber match

ccubase-32catcherslideWinthrop scored five runs in the first two innings and pulled away late for an 11-3 victory over Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon at Pelicans Ballpark. The Eagles improve to 11-13, 4-2 Big South) while the Chanticleers fall to (11-13, 2-4).

Coastal managed 11 hits in the loss, including three each by Michael Paez and Zach Remillard, but stranded 12 runners in the set back.

Winthrop grabbed the early advantage, scoring twice in the top of the first. Leighton Daniels drew a leadoff walk and scored two batters later on TJ Olesczuk’s RBI double. Olesczuk stole third and Babe Thomas walked. Thomas was caught in a run-down while trying to steal second, but Olesczuk was able to score from third prior to Thomas being tagged out.

The Eagles loaded the bases in the second with no outs and pushed their lead to 5-0. Chad Smith started the frame with a single and Clay Altman reached on a fielder’s choice as Smith was safe at second on the ground ball. Brad Kaczka followed with a walk. Daniels drove in the first run and kept the bases loaded by reaching on an error. A wild pitch allowed the second run of the inning to score. For the second time in as many chances, Olesczuk hit his second RBI double of the game to plate Daniels.

Winthrop threatened in the third, but Connor Owings threw out a runner at the plate. Coastal rode that momentum to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Richard Carter singled, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a Paez RBI single.

In the fourth inning, the Eagles loaded the bases with one out on three consecutive singles. Thomas walked for force home Kyle Edwards and put Winthrop on top 6-1. Andrew Beckwith responded with a pair of strikeouts to limit the damage. The visitors built on their lead, scoring once in the fifth to make the score 7-1. Kaczka singled and scored on an RBI double by Daniels.

The Chanticleers made it a 7-2 game in the bottom of the fifth. Carter walked and Paez singled. A wild pitch moved the two runners up 90 feet and Remillard followed with an RBI single.

Winthrop added four runs in the eighth thanks to an RBI triple by John Menken, a two-run single by Kaczka and an RBI ground out by Daniels.

Coastal closed the contest with back-to-back double by Paez and Remillard to provide the 11-3 final.
