Chants finish ninth in national tournament

The Coastal Carolina men’s golf team placed ninth in the 11-team field at the Gifford Collegiate, hosted by UCLA at the par 71, 7,360-yard CordeValle Golf Club.

The prestigious event featured seven teams ranked among the nation’s top 41 and was unusual in format in that each team had six golfers with the best five scores counting as opposed to a fivesome and using the best scores. Southern California won the three-day event with a score of eight-under par 1057. Host UCLA was second with a 54-hole score of four-under 1061.

Coastal Carolina was led by Roberto Ballesteros, who tied for 30th. The sophomore fired a four-over 75 Wednesday and finished with a 54-hole score of 223 (+10). Ballesteros stood at six over through 13 holes before carding birdies on his 14th and 19th holes to finish with his 75. Charlie Winegardner posted the Chants best round Wednesday, shooting a one-over par 72. The senior tied for 39th with a three-day score of 224. Winegardner had three birdies and two bogeys to stand at one-under through 12 holes, but suffered a double bogey on his 13th hole before putting together five pars to finish his round at one-over.

Sebastian Soderberg matched his opening-round score of 77 Wednesday. Thanks to an even-par 71 Tuesday, the junior tied for 41st with a three-day score of 225 (+12). He carded a team-best four birdies in the final round, but could not over a triple bogey on his fifth hole.

A trio of freshmen rounded out Coastal’s contingent. Andrew Dorn tied for 50th with a 54-hole score of 228 (74-77-77). Eaton Renwick, making his collegiate debut, trimmed five shot off his second-round score and had a birdie on his final hole for a four-over 75 Wednesday. He tied for 58th with a three-round score of 230 (75-80-75).  Peter Valasek, Coastal’s first-round leader, finished tied for 69th with a tally of 239 (73-85-81).

The Gifford Collegiate is the final event for Coastal during the fall portion of the schedule. The Chanticleers will return to action in Ponte Vedra, Fla., Jan. 30-31 playing in the Jacksonville Invitational at TPC Stadium Course.
