Chants shoot record round to gain ground on Liberty

Coastal Carolina turned in three 68’s and two 69’s to fire a Big South Championship single-round record 273 Tuesday.

Coastal has a 36-hole total of 558 to stand in second place and three strokes behind leader Liberty at the 2012 Big South Championships, played at the par 72, 7.120-yard Patriot Club at Grand Harbor.

The 273 is the second-lowest single round in CCU history and the 558 ties for the fourth-best 36-hole score in school history. However, being 15 under par for a round is a CCU record in relation to par.

At the par 70 Golden Horseshoe Golf Club where the 2007 NCAA Championship was held, Coastal also carded a 558 for the first two rounds and shot a school record 272 in the third round. (Cameron Hooper and Zack Byrd turned in 67’s, Lindsay Renolds shot 68 and Dustin Johnson shot 70 at the 2007 NCAA Championship.)

Coastal Carolina is the only team in the field to have all five golfers among the top 14.

First day leader Liberty kept is advantage despite Coastal’s record-setting day. Leading by five strokes after the first round, the Flames shot 275 to maintain a three-shot lead (280-275=555). Coastal is six shots clear of third place Charleston Southern, which turned in an impressive 12-under par round today (285-279=564).

Coastal’s Charlie Winegardner remains in a tie for second place with Liberty’s Robert Karlsson. The two would be in first had it not been for a 9-under 63 turned in by 36-hole leader Daniel Kim of Gardner-Webb. Kim sits at 11-under 133, four shots ahead of Winegardner and Karlsson’s 7-under 137.

Winegardner got off to an impressive start, posting birdies on five of the first eight holes. The senior suffered a tough four-hole stretch, tuning in two bogeys and a double bogey. However, Winegardner had birdies on three of his last five holes to record his 4-under par 68. Winegarnder, who shot 69 in the opening round, is ending his career in outstanding fashion, shooting par or better and posting a 14-under par over his last seven rounds.

Sebastian Soderberg and Peter Valasek were Coastal’s other 68’s on the day. Both Soderberg and Valasek carded four birdies with no bogeys for their round of 4-under par Tuesday. Soderberg, a three-time All-Big South honoree, is tied for sixth at 5-under par for 36 holes (71-68=139). He had birdies on holes 3, 8, 15 and 18. Valasek is tied for 14th after two rounds, shooting 75-68=143. The freshman had birdies on holes 5, 6, 13 and 18 for his round of 4-under par Tueday.

Roberto Ballesteros and Ben Wheeler each carded rounds of 3-under par 69 Tuesday. Ballesteros is tied for ninth after 36 holes with a score of 4-under 140 (71-69). The sophomore was 3-under at the turn and was as low as 5-under through 15 holes before suffering a bogey on 16 and double bogey on 17. However, he closed his round on a positive note with a birdie on the par 5 18th.

Wheeler is tied with Valasek for 14th after his 69 Tuesday. The freshman shot 74 in the opening round and sits at 1-under par (143) with 18 holes remaining. Wheeler posted six birdies Tuesday including four on the front nine. However, two bogeys left him at 2-under par at the turn. He would bogey the par 4 11th before rallying to birdie the par 5 13 and par 5 18th for his round of 3-under.

Coastal Carolina will look to unseat defending champion Liberty with 18 final holes Wednesday. The Chants have 13 conference titles to their credit, including 12 of the last 15.
