CCU hires S.C. native Peake as defensive backs coach

Coastal Carolina head football coach Joe Moglia has named Dyran Peake assistant coach. Peake, who will serve as the Chanticleers’ defensive backs coach, comes to Coastal Carolina after three seasons at the University of Massachusetts.

“Dyran not only is an outstanding coach, but he will be a tremendous asset to our recruiting efforts,” Moglia said. “He was proficient in recruiting the Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania areas while at UMass and has created strong ties in the Virginia/Washington D.C. area, North Carolina and Florida. Last, he is a South Carolina native and knows this area well. He has been to where we want to go, the NCAA Division I FCS title game, and hopefully he can draw upon those experiences to help us reach that goal.”

Peake was the outside linebackers coach with the Minutemen in 2011 after being the defensive backs coach for the 2009 and ’10 seasons. He led the secondary unit, which started two freshmen cornerbacks, to the 37th-best pass defensive in the nation (allowing just 184 yards per game).

Peake tutored current Cincinnati Bengal and UMass All-American Jeromy Miles, who finished with 62 tackles and two interceptions as a senior in ’09. Peake also worked as an instructor at the Glazier Clinics at UMass.

As an assistant at fellow Colonial Athletic Association member Delaware from 2005-08, he served in a variety of capacities, including assistant defensive backs coach (2005-06), cornerbacks coach (2007), and cornerbacks coach/special teams coordinator (2008). In 2008, he assisted the pass defense that allowed a conference-low 10 passing touchdowns (sixth in the NCAA) and the second lowest defense completion rate in the CAA (57 percent). Peake also helped the secondary unit to allow just 167 passing yards per game (31st in the NCAA). He developed a pair of All-CAA selections in cornerbacks Anthony Walters and Tyrone Grant. Walters went on to earn AP All-America honors and Grant set a school record and UD single-season record for interceptions returned for touchdowns. In 2007, he helped lead a much-improved Blue Hens defense to an 11-4 record and a spot in the NCAA Division I FCS title game. That season, he tutored Walters as a freshman, who led the CAA in total passes defended (nine pass break-ups and three interceptions). Also in 2007, Delaware ranked 25th in passing defense in the NCAA and second in the conference in interceptions (13). Peake also recruited and helped develop AP All-America safety Anthony Bratton as well as fellow All-American Charles Graves.

Peake’s first full-time coaching job came at Cornell in 2004. He worked with the tight ends and H-Backs for the Big Red, helping the squad go from zero league wins in 2003 to a 4-3 Ivy League mark. It marked the first time in Ivy League history that a team went from no wins to a winning conference mark. He assisted an offense that ranked second in the league in passing at 217.2 yards per game.

Peake began his coaching career at Duke (2001-03). He worked with the wide receivers during the 2001 season and with the defensive backs during the 2002 and 2003 campaigns. Although young in the business, Peake used his South Carolina ties to help Duke sign All-American cornerback John Talley, the Blue Devils’ career interception leader, and one of the Blue Devils’ all-time leading receivers, Jomar Wright.

A native of Duncan, S.C., Peake is a 2001 graduate of Catawba College with a degree in information systems with a concentration in programming. He was a three-year starter at safety, serving as captain as a senior when he earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors. As a senior, he helped the team to an 11-1 record, the squads’ third-straight South Atlantic title and the NCAA Division II semifinals. He also helped Catawba to 11-wins seasons, SAC titles and NCAA II playoff berths in 1999 and 2000, finishing his career with 221 tackles and six interceptions.

Dyran and his wife, Latorsha, have a son, Jayden.
