Chants hold first scrimmage as Hillary holds starting job

The Coastal Carolina football team held its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday afternoon inside Brooks Stadium with returning senior quarterback retaining the starting job so far this spring.

The scrimmage lasted roughly 50 plays and was just over an hour, with Hillary working with the first unit and taking the majority of snaps.

First-year Coastal Carolina head coach Joe Moglia has not officially named any starters but said he was pleased by the workout given the new offensive and defensive systems the team has had to learn in a short period of time.

“I was reasonably happy with today’s scrimmage,” Coastal Carolina head coach Joe Moglia said. “Today was our first true ‘live’ day of hitting and that showed in some areas. We have a long way to go as far as everyone understanding our entire schemes and system, but that is to be expected with a new coaching staff. Overall, our pace was good on both sides of the ball and this is about where we hoped to be after one week of contact.”

The first 30 minutes of the practice session included 10 minutes each of offensive/defensive walk through, stretching and individual position work. The scrimmage portion of the Chants’ eighth spring practice, which got underway at 3 p.m., featured the first team offense facing the first team defense and the second team offense against the second team defense in four sets of eight plays each starting at their own 30-yard line.

Hillary led the first team offense onto the field against the first team defense and immediately directed the Chants to a first down. However, the defense bowed up and converted a fourth down stop on the eighth and final play of the series.

Cody Craig took the first snaps with the twos. Craig and led the second team offense to the five-yard line completing passes to Zach Silverburg and Niccolo Mastromatteo along the way.  Grant Clayton capped the series with a 22-yard field goal on the eighth play of the series.

On the ones’ second series, Hillary found Kenny Jones for a 16-yard completion and a first down. However, on the ensuing play safety Marcellus Hunter picked off Hillary at the 26-yard line, nullifying the drive.

On the two’s next series, Alex Ross hooked up with newcomer Shaquille Lindsey for 23 yards to move the ball to the 33. Ross then found Tyrell Banks for 17 yards down to the 16-yard line, but the play would be nullified by an offensive penalty. The defense would force a stop three plays later, ending the scoring threat.

Neither offense could get much going over the final two series as the Chanticleer defense held strong for the final 25 plays.

Between each series, the Coastal punting units took the field for a pair of snaps.  On the fourth attempt of the day senior Akeem Wesley broke through the line and blocked the punt.

The Chanticleers return to the field on Friday for the first of three workouts that concludes with the spring’s second scrimmage on Saturday.
