Chants fall at BYU, seek better luck in Las Vegas

ccuhoops-byuCoastal Carolina had four players reach double-digits, but that could not offset a hot shooting Brigham Young team in an 81-65 loss to the Cougars.

CCU (1-3) got 11 points each from Joseph Williams-Powell, Elijah Wilson and Demario Beck, while Amidou Bamba added 10 points.

BYU (3-0) remained perfect on the young season by out shooting CCU 48 percent to 34 percent, and that includes a decisive second half where the Cougars shot 50 percent (17-34) from the field.

CCU did not help themselves at the free throw line only hitting eight of their 16 attempts and five of their 26 three point field goals.

BYU’s leading scorers Eric Mika and Nick Emery proved to be every bit as good as the CCU coaches expected. Mika, one of the best big men in the nation, scored 19 points and completed a double-double with a game-high 11 points.

Emery was right there with him scoring 14 points and got the Cougars going in the first half knocking down threes the first two times he touched the ball.

Bamba came off the bench for CCU and had six points to lead the Chants.

The Chanticleers will play the final game of the Main Event Global Tournament Monday when they face Southern Utah in Las Vegas at 6 p.m. (ET).
