Chants lose eighth straight in marathon with Cougars

ccubase-35With runners on first and second in the bottom of the 12th, Nick Pappas lined a two-out single off the right field wall to give the College of Charleston an 11-10 win versus Coastal Carolina Tuesday night at Patriots Point.

The game lasted five hours and 13 minutes and featured 15 pitchers. It was Coastal’s eighth straight loss and marked the end of a 10-game road swing. The Chanticleers will close the 2014 regular season with a three-game series versus Campbell on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All three contests will begin at noon at Pelicans Ballpark.

Coastal loaded the bases with two outs in the 12th thanks to a single and two walks, However, Charleston’s Champ Rowland, the starting shortstop turned pitcher for the inning, ended the threat with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the 12th, Blake Butler reached on a one-out single. After a strikeout, Carl Wise drew a two-out walk, setting the stage for Pappas’ game-winner.

In the 11th inning, the Chants loaded the bases with one out thanks to walks to Jake Kane, Tyler Chadwick and Riley Norton. Steven Whitaker was hit by a pitch to force home a run. The Chants kept the bases loaded but could not convert as Blake Ross recorded a strikeout and ground out.

In the home half of the 11th, Ryan Welke reached on a one-out single. Pinch runner Gunnar Heidt took third on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. Austin Bello was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Morgan Phillips hit a fly ball to left field, which was just deep enough to score Heidt and tie the game. Bello took second on the Phillips fly out. Bradley Jones singled to left field and Bello attempted to score from second, but Anthony Marks threw out Bello at home to end the inning and force the 12th inning.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Ben Boykin drew a one-out walk and Carl Wise followed with home run to left field to clear the bases.

The College used a similar formula in the third inning to expand its lead. Boykin drew a leadoff walk, Wise followed with a single and the two advanced on an error. Pappas plated Boykin with a sacrifice fly and Welke hit a two-run home run over the left field fence for a 5-0 lead.

Coastal got on the board in the fourth. Kane hit a leadoff double and Riley Norton welcomed new Cougar pitcher Brandon Glazer with an RBI single to center field. G.K. Young, who doubled earlier, hit a ball deep to the center field wall that was ruled a triple, scoring Norton on the play.

The Cougars got one of those runs back in the fourth. Butler singled and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. After a walk, Wise brought Butler home with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Chants bounced back to cut its deficit in half in the fifth. Anthony Marks hit a leadoff single, took second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Michael Paez.

Coastal kept the momentum in the sixth inning, scoring six runs on five hits to take a 9-6 lead. Stephen Whitaker and Young had singles to start the frame and, after an out, Marks loaded the bases with a walk. Paez singled to left to bring home Whitaker. Owings hit a ground ball to third, but a throwing error to the catcher allowed two runs to score. Jake Kane followed with a two-run single and scored on Chadwick’s single to center field.

CofC took advantage of two CCU errors to score three runs and tie the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh. Wise started the home half by reaching on an error and Pappas followed with a single. With two outs, Morgan Phillips hit a double to score Wise. Bradley Jones then reached on an error, allowing Pappas to score. Then, with Phillips on third and Jones on first, Jones attempted to steal second, but purposely got caught in a rundown, allowing Phillips to score the tying run before Jones was tagged out in the rundown.

Paez led the CCU offense by going 4-for-6 with two RBIs while Young was 3-for-4.

Coastal utilized six pitchers with Chad Adkins (0-1) taking the loss. Zac Burke worked the first 2.1 innings, allowing five hits and five runs. Mike Morrison pitched the nest 2.2 innings and allowed two hits and one run with five strikeouts. Tom Durkin pitched a scoreless inning and Andrew Beckwith allowed one unearned run in 1.2 innings. Brock Hunter pitched a scoreless inning and Tyler Poole allowed one unearned run in 2.1 innings.
