Chants maintain first place in division with win over PC

ccuhoops-badouThe Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team kept control of its own destiny with a 70-51 win over visiting Presbyterian College Wednesday night inside The HTC Center.

The Chants are now in a tie for first place in the Big South Conference South Division with Gardner-Webb, a team the Chanticleers swept during the season. With a win on Saturday at home over Charleston Southern the Chants will claim the number one seed in the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Championships and at least a share of the South Division crown.

The win gave head coach Cliff Ellis 664 victories for his career which tied him in the NCAA record book with legendary UCLA head coach John Wooden. Wooden won 664 games over a 29-year career in which he won 10 NCAA Championships.

Coastal is now 17-12 overall and 10-5 in Big South action. The Blue Hose fall to 6-24 overall and 2-13 in Big South play.

Sophomore Badou Diagne led the way for the Chants tonight as he grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and scored 13 points. His 18 rebounds tied him for seventh in the Coastal Carolina annals for most rebounds in a game. The double-double was Diagne’s third of the season and second in the last four games.

Sophomore Warren Gillis scored a team-high 14 points while junior Josh Cameron chipped in 11. Ten of the 12 Chanticleers who dressed for the game scored at least two points in the contest.

CCU struggled shooting the ball as the Chants hit just 40.8 percent of their shots while holding PC to 38.5 percent. Coastal cut down on its turnovers, having just six in the game compared to 19 in its last outing.

Coastal dominated the boards out-rebounding the Blue Hose 46-34. CCU also controlled the paint outscoring PC 44-18 on the inside.

The Chanticleers will host lowcountry rival Charleston Southern this Saturday, March 1 at 2 pm inside The HTC Center. With a win the Chants guarantee themselves the number one seed out of the South Division and a share of the division title. Coastal will also honor its two seniors, El Hadji Ndieguene and Eric Smith, prior to the opening tip.
