Chants kick off Moglia era with big win over NC A&T

The Joe Moglia era began with an impressive victory on Saturday night as more than 9,000 fans gathered at Brooks Stadium to see the new coach lead Coastal Carolina to a 29-13 victory over NC A&T.

The Chanticleers jumped out to a 14-0 lead on touchdown runs by quarterback Aramis Hillary and running back Jeremy Height. The Chants rolled up more than 400 yards in total offense from their new spread offense.

Hillary threw for one score and ran for another from 1 yard out, finishing the game with a career-high 274 yards on 19-28 completions. He threw 33 yards for a score to junior receiver Matt Hazel early in the third quarter to put Coastal on top 24-10.

After that, Coastal fed Height, who responded with a career high 109 yards on 20 carries that included a first half scoring run of 22 yards.

The two teams traded field goals in the second quarter before North Carolina A&T drove 72 yards to score on a 23-yard pass play with just three seconds left in the half to make the score 17-10.

Hazel’s scoring reception helped Coastal regain the momentum to start the second half, as it finished off a 10-play, 72-yard scoring drive.

Junior receiver Nick Mastromatteo helped the offense with a career high 114 receiving yards on seven catches, including two of more than 30 yards.

Defensively,  junior linebacker Mike McClure led the way with 12 tackles and defensive back Dontavious Johnson intercepted three passes.

Moglia was coaching his first game after being named Coastal Carolina’s new head coach in December, replacing a fired David Bennett.
