Chants play No. 5 Clemson to hard-fought scoreless tie

ccusoc-headerclemThe Coastal Carolina men’s soccer team extended its current season-long unbeaten streak to four matches as the Chanticleers battled in-state rival and fifth-ranked Clemson to a double overtime scoreless draw Tuesday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

It marked the second draw of the season for Coastal (4-4-2), who also played 110 scoreless minutes at home against UAB on Sept. 5. It was additionally the third match of the season against a ranked opponent. Clemson’s overall record moves to 7-1-2 with the tie.

The even result was reflected in the statistics as Coastal finished with a slim 10-9 advantage in overall shots, and each side managed to put five attempts on frame.

Braulio Linares-Ortiz denied Clemson the best scoring opportunity of the match, stopping a Tiger penalty kick in the 26th minute, and finished the game with five total saves. Clemson keeper Ximo Miralles matched Linares-Ortiz with five saves.

The Clemson penalty kick came after a handball was called against a Chanticleer defender in the box. Thales Moreno lined up to take the kick, sending it low and down the middle where a diving Linares-Ortiz managed to deflect the ball away with his feet.

The remainder of the first half finished with Coastal putting three shots on goal to Clemson’s two, though none of the attempts were especially threatening.

Neither side held the advantage of play in the second half. Coastal out-chanced Clemson 2-0, though neither attempt proved too difficult for Miralles to handle. Wes White had the first opportunity in the 74th minute, heading a loose ball on frame. Martin Melchor provided the second shot on goal in the 83rd minute, sending a line drive right into the chest of Miralles.

Clemson put a shot on frame in each of the overtime periods, providing the only scoring chance of the extra time, but Linares-Ortiz held strong to preserve the clean sheet.

Coastal next heads to Hartwick on Oct. 8 to play its Sun Belt Conference opener. The match between the Chants and Hawks is slated for 2 pm.
