Chants earn top 5 ranking; Garbanzo nets CSN honor

A week and two more wins after earning the program’s highest ranking of sixth by both College Soccer News and Soccer America, the Chanticleers have reached a new height with a No. 5 ranking in this week’s College Soccer News Top 30 National Poll.

Through 13 games, the Chanticleers hold an 11-2-0 overall mark. Coastal holds the nation’s longest current winning streak with victories in each of its last 10 matches after starting the season 1-2 (both losses were against top 15 ranked opponents).

Equally impressive is the Chants’ 6-0-0 start to Big South Conference play. The Chanticleers own the nation’s longest conference regular season unbeaten and winning streaks. Coastal has not lost a regular season conference match in 26 outings (25-0-1), while posting wins in each of its last 25.

Also on Monday, Coastal Carolina’s Ricky Garbanzo  earned National Team of the Week honors from College Soccer News for the week ending Oct. 20 after netting two goals last week.

The award is Garbanzo’s second individual recognition this season after being named the Big South Attacking Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 13. Overall, the honor is the junior’s fifth career National Team of the Week plaudit after garnering four last season.

Through eight weeks this season, the Chanticleers have earned four College Soccer News National Team of the Week awards. Pedro Ribeiro was named to the team for the weeks ending Sept. 12 and Oct. 7 and Devin Cook picked up the honor for the week ending Sept. 23.

Garbanzo opened his week with the game-tying goal in an eventual 3-1 win at conference rival Winthrop. He scored in the 32nd minute with a cheeky chip over Winthrop’s keeper on a cross from Ribeiro. The Rock Hill, S.C., native then scored the game-winner as Coastal extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 1-0 win over Radford. Again, Garbanzo’s goal came off a cross by Ribeiro into the box. Garbanzo was able to redirect the waist-high cross past the diving Radford keeper.

With the goals, Garbanzo has scored five times in Coastal’s last four matches. Moreover, of his team-high seven scoring strikes, four have proven to be game-winners. He currently leads the Big South with four game-winning goals and is second in the league with 47 shot attempts.
