Chants ready to tangle with Cowboys for CBI series title

ccuhoops-huddleCoastal Carolina and Wyoming will start the 2017 College Basketball Championship (CBI) Series at the HTC Center in Conway Monday at 7:30 p.m.

With the first game being played in Conway, game two, and if needed, game three, will be played in Laramie, Wyo., the home of the Cowboys.

The Chanticleers have won four of its last five games and during that stretch may be playing their best basketball of the season.  Over the three games of the CBI, Coastal is averaging over 81 points per game, over seven points per game more than during the season.

CCU’s (19-17) defense has also picked up, holding their tournament opponents to 69.3 points per game, which is over three points less than during the regular season.

Junior Jaylen Shaw has pushed is scoring average up to almost 15 points per game, after averaging 22 over the past three games.  Demario Beck has also picked up his game and is averaging 18 points and nine rebounds per game during the CBI Tournament.

Elijah Wilson is averaging over 13 points per game, and the third-leading scorer in CCU history has been even better in the post season.  He is averaging over 14 points per game while shooting 40 percent from the field, 50 percent on his three-point field goals and 89 percent at the free throw line.

Freshman Artur Labinowicz has moved into the starting lineup due to the injury to starting point guard Shivaughn Wiggins. All Labinowicz has done is give the CCU fans a glimpse of what he can do in the starting lineup.  He is averaging 11 points and 6.3 rebounds per game after being inserted in the starting five.

Senior Colton Ray-St Cyr has continued to be his steady self, averaging nine points and six rebounds per game during the tournament, which mirrors his regular season performance.

The Chants are getting plenty of bench support heading into the championship series.  CCU has been getting right at 50 percent shooting from the field from the bench players while scoring over eight points and grabbing almost nine rebounds per game.

CCU will face an ever improving Wyoming team that comes into the series with a 21-14 record.  Wyoming only won 14 games a season ago, but have put together a team that like the Chants, may be playing their best basketball of the season.  The Cowboys have also won four of its past five games and is averaging 78 points per game.

They have four players averaging double digits on the season with Justin James leading the way with 15.6 points per game and five rebounds.

Hayden Dalton averages 12.3 points per game, but is also the team-leader in rebounds averaging 8.3 per game.  Jason McManamen is next at 11.3 points per game and, while Wyoming has six players with over 46 assists, McManamen’s 88 leads the team.

Alan Herndon averages 11.2 points per game and his 67 blocked shots leads the team on a team that has 160 total blocks on the season.

The game, originally scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. tip, was moved up to a 7:30 p.m. (ET) tip.  The game will be nationally broadcast on ESPNU.
