Chants score top 10 finish; Dorn places sixth at ETSU

Coastal Carolina’s Andrew Dorn turned in three rounds of under-par golf to finish sixth at the ETSU Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 7.147-yard Blackthorn Club at The Ridges in Jonesborough, TN.

The Chanticleers tied for 10th in the 14-team field, recording a 7-over par 871 (285-295-291).

Virginia, in 10th place after the first round, jumped to third after the second round – shooting a 16-under 272 – and shot a final-round 13-under par 275 for a 54-hole total of 842. The 11th-ranked Cavaliers edged 13th-ranked Virginia Tech (843) by one stroke and 17th-ranked Kent State (844) by two strokes. Host ETSU finished fourth (852) followed by Wake Forest, #26 Memphis, #48 Tennessee, #47 Missouri, UNC Wilmington. Coastal tied for 10th with Furman.

Dorn, who has shot par or better in six of his nine rounds this season, moved from 15th to 10th to finish tied for sixth, shooting rounds of 71-69-69. His 54-hole total of 7-under par 209 was six shot off the lead and was the junior’s career best 54-hole score by eight strokes. Dorn only had one bogey, taking a six on the par-5 8th hole, with birdies on holes 2, 4, 10 and 14 for his second consecutive 69. His 12 birdies and 37 pars of three rounds were both among the field’s top 10.

Ben Wheeler finished 16th for his second straight top 20 finish. The junior has shot par or better in five of nine rounds this season and his 2-under 214 (70-72-72) is his fifth-best 54-hole score. For the second consecutive day, Wheeler had four birdies and four bogeys with 10 pars for his even-par round of 72. His 12 birdies tied for ninth-best over 54 holes along with Dorn.

Olle Widegren tied for 54th (69-77-78=224), Peter Valasek tied for 56th (76-77-72=225) and Christopher Williams tied for 67th (75-77-79=231). Valasek, with Wheeler, was fifth-best in the field by playing the par 3’s at 1-under. Williams was one of 18 to record an eagle.

Coastal Carolina will have nearly a month off before returning to action Nov. 4-5 at UCLA’s annual Gifford Collegiate.
